Forest closed to attract deer,
elk to feeding site
rhe 25.000- acre fenced area of the
Starkey Experimental Forest and
Range, southwest of laG rande. has
been temporarily closed to the public
until early spring in 1900
The annual, winter closure will
allow researchers to bait deer and elk
into th winter feeding site within the
closure "In order to attract deer and
elk to the winter feeding site, we arc
setting mil alfalfa hay and pellets
along all major roads throughout the
study area." I-arry Bryant, wildlife
biologist for the USDA Forest Ser
vice. said.
"W e are asking the public to
cooperate and remain out of the area
*> that an im al can find and readily
use the bait along the roads, thus en
suring that animals move to the
winter site as quickly as possible,"
Bryant said.
Once deer and elk arc baited into
the winter feeding site, their ptiy steal
condition and repr»»ductivc status
will be checked ¿»me animals will
be fitted with radio collars or car
tagged for identification
The animals will be released back
into the main study area in early
spring. 1990 The enclosure will
reopen to the public at that time

dituitor of the 55 Alive Mature Dnv

(AARP). said, " in order to take ad
vantage of the auto insurance dis
counts, drivers 55 and older must
complete a driver education course
every three years and those 70 and
oliler must take the c»Hirsc every two
years "
Mackey said the aging process can
slow reaction tim e, narrow
peripheral vision and cause hearing
loss and these factors can cause ac

eight hour classroom course taught
by AARP alerts older drivers about
how the aging process affects driv

traffic hazards and ailvcrsc driving
conditions.
Because of the new law, Mackey
said AARP’* 55 Alive Mature Dnv

the number of course graduates in

said there are 750 licensed auto in

that until now only a handful of in
surance companies have provided
auto insurance discounts to oliler
drivers.

organization offers a wide variety of
membership benefits, legislative
representation at federal and state
