fishermen in 1988, though that success
* as actually the result o f two separate
steelhead runs the 1987 88 run and the
1988 89 run At any rate, the ti*al
catch for the John Day in 1988 numbered 224 greater than the stale s se
cond most successful summer steelhc.id fishery last year, the Columbia
River below Bonneville Dam
‘ Probably the most significant aspect o f this whole thing is the fact that
these (o f the John Day River» arc wild fish.” said Errol Claire. ORFTV
District fisheries Biologist tor the John Day River Basin Wc are able
to manage the habitat and the environment in such a way that w e've still
got a river system that can put out that kind o f fish This is natural pro^
duct ion. when you look at a lot o f those other rivers, that catch is based
on a mued fishery , since all those other rivers have got hatchery stix'k
But the Ji*hn Day is an entirely wild fishery, and it's right on top o f the
heap, so that's important
Three other eastern Oregon streams also contributed to the state's list
o f top ten summer steelhead producers tor 1988. including the Columbia
River above Bonneville Dam, the Deschutes River and Elood River
Slightly lower counts o f fish passing the Bonneville and Ji*hn Day Dams
in 1988 plus poor water and fishing conditions around much o f eastern
Oregon during early 1989 will doubtless be reflected in this year's catch
totals o f the 1988-89 run. yet better water conditions and the somewhat
higher dam counts observed this year could result in an improved fishery
tor the 1989-90 scav>n
"T h e run appears to be much better this year.'' Claire said of the John
Day River in particular
"We re going to have to wait until we do our
itspawning ground »counts, but I think this year is going to be a better year
than last year ”
Claire emphasized that while the number o f steelhead counted past the
John Day Dam was greater this year than the past two years, it is only
a general indication o f what can be expected
"W h ile wc certainly use the dam counts as a nmgh indicator, we haven't
been really successful in correlating run size with those counts The dif
tercncc is. wc can't differentiate wild and hatchery fish, that's just total
steelhead O f course, we know the fish wc arc going to get tup the John
Dayl are going to be the wild segment
The tables below suggest past angler successes on eastern Oregon sum
liter steelhead rivers of the Columbia River system, compiled from data
tn»m returned salmon steelhead k.inls When noting the fluctuations in year
ly catch totals o f each river. Claire adv ises anglers to consider that steelhead
run in cycles, and many variables influence the run size each year, often
the result of stream or ocean conditions o f several years prior
"W h ile w e've had some good years, we need to realize that wc are go
ing to have some years that arc not always going to be right out there on
