in the free enterprise system And in

If I grow vegetables on my farm and

where I'll sell
I think it would he wrong for a couple o f the town's folks to call on
government to force me to sell my vegetables to them, at a lower price
Thank goodness there are others who agree w ith my idea o f free enter
prise N c 4 in the vegetable business, but m the wildlife business And these
folks should he applauded, encouraged and supported There arc way too
many o f the other kind
Ducks Unlimited and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation arc two (there
surely are more) organizations that are applying the basic principles o f
free enterprise to achieve their goals o f wildlife preservation, enhance
ment and enjoyment Their principal means is to preserve and enhance
wildlife habitat and they do it with their own money
Both organizations have major fund raising activities Neither leans he.ivi
ly on government to achieve their goals When habitat preservation in
solves significant control o f the use o f land, they step right up and buy
it When habitat cnlianccment requires the constitution o( ponds or cover
they hire the contractors to do it
Ducks Unlimited has targeted the northern nesting grounds as a major
preservation project and they do it by buying vast acreages o f wetlands
so they can control its use rather than trying to get government to impose
control over the former land owners Tlic R<x'ky Mountain Elk Founda
non targets winter range and has already purchased thousands o f acres
for (hat use
W c find these folks in stark contrast to the few ‘ •preservations'' who
want government, and therefore all o f us, to pay the cost o f preserving
their favorite species These arc (he anti free enterprise people that some
would call socialists
And they are everywhere The Spotted Owl champions want to losk up
thousands and thousands o f acres o f forest to “ save' an owl that has no
beneficial use (not like a duck that you can cat) and that few o f us has
ever even seen (not like an elk. albeit out o f season). And these people
want to do it not with their own money but with ours It’ s your children
and my children who arc being asked to pay the price by giving up the
dream o f owning their own home It's your neighbor and mine who will
have to pay the price o f giving up a job, relocating, and learning a new
trade.
The water savers arc the same kind o f non-free enterprise controllers
When all the people demanding minimum stream (lo w s want that had
enough to buy the land now irrigated bul which will be dry. I will applaud
them too
When one or more folks want something bad enough, they'll buy it
Until then all o f us should resist their efforts to take it away from us in
the thinly veiled name ot the “ public good.” Thai's way too socialist tor
