Leukemia, a cancer that destroys
blood cells, has been unbeatable in
the past Victims have had no
recourse hut to wait for the inevitable
to happen But since 1986. doctors
have successfully completed hone
marrow transplants that have given
these type of patients a chance to
fight for their lives and win Alter­
native methods previously
using
ivnly radiation and chemotherapy,

able to provide a hone marrow donor
match.

that the chance of finding an
unrelated donor match is about I in
20 thousand And so the goal of the
program is to have about 100 thou
sand available donors, as tJve center
says it is important to have the tissue
typings of av many potential donors
on file as possible to increase the
chances that a match w ill he found
Oregon is now initialing a hone
marrow typing program in conjunc­
tion vc uh the Red Cross blood dtaw
