Heppner
The Richls, who came to Heppner
in February of 1981. began a reading
incentive program for elementary
school children four years ago
Helen first saw a report about a
similar program on television and
felt that the program could !*c
adapted to fit Heppner
" I thought, what could 1 do as a
little person to help kids learn to
read "
I approached
Linda
Shaw
(read in g
specialist at
Heppner Elementary School) She
picked the idea up and she and other
teachers formed the program ," said
Helen The program works like this
a child reads a certain number o f
hooks and completes a brief hook
report to receive a certificate for an
ice cream treat which the Richls
donate from the drive-in
" W e wanted each student-low
readers and high readers to have a
g o a l," said Helen Helen said that
the first year a few kids participated,
the second year 103 participated and
won 190 in certificates, and the third
year 187 students won 376
certificates.
" I t (the program) helps create a
habit o f reading," says Shaw " I
really appreciate what they’ ve
done It provides an incentive. It's
a good way lor teachers to challenge
students I appreciate the teachers
too They spend tunc developing in
di v (du alized goals fo r their
students ”
" I t 's made a tremendous d if
" W e sincerely meant to provide
what we thought was the key to
develop a good student, and that was
reading," said Helen
The Riehls are almost as proud o f
the kids' successes as the kids are
themselves, "w hat a reward to he
able to do something for the kids "
The Riehls also offered incentives
(ice cream) for other activities and
posted the children's posters on the
restaurant walls. " I f the school calls
and needs incentives for a positive
experience, we ll do it." says Helen
" I think when we hang the kids'
work in the drive-in it's the seniors
who are thrilled It's their talk o f the
day My kids and my seniors are to
he treated extra special "
Five years ago. the Richls started
a roller rink at the Morrow County
Fairgrounds during the winter
months At the time they had young
children "T h ere just wasn't enough
for the young people to d o ," said
Tom Tom still operates the rink on
weekends
The Riehls came to Heppner
"because we wanted to live in Hcpjv
ncr W c decided we wanted to live
here. so we looked for w hat was for
sale,” said Tom The couple had
come to Heppner during hunting
season since 1964 and liked the
town They lived in Portland where
Tom worked with Hyster Co in
quality control and Helen worked as
a secretary for U.S. Bank for 17
years Now they work around seven
days a week at their restaurant They
have three sons, a daughter, two
daughters in-law and two grandsons
ference." said Heppner Elementary
School Princ ipal Don Cole "In fact
I vs as m a classroom this morning
and the teacher was having kids turn
in their progress slips The excite
merit and discussion was tremen
dous it's been a really good pro
gram li affects every level we have
Not only has it been good for kids,
hui good for the community."
'T h e y (the Riehlsi are always div
ing something for the kids," Cole
added
T h ey 're just very kid
oriented."
