from the Episcopal Church assisted with serving

and wants to sec all the children in town.

decorations for a tree for the sitting room
Monday evening a holiday decorating party will he in the dining room
The birthday dinner will he at noon on Wednesday with baked chicken,
later tots, mixes) vegetables, jellied applesauce, biscuits, cheese sticks, cake

The regular birthday prize of a grocery gift certificate will he drawn

to hear that Joyce Breeding, assistant cook, has resigned to take a lull
time cooking position. The good work she has done at the center is ap
predated and she is wished well on her new job

and Helen (jay Brandenburg He at

On March I, 1933. he married
Ruth Hughes at Klamath Falls Hsey
lived at Redding, Calif where he
operated a lumber mill for about 15
years
They moved to Heppner m 1961
and he operated the Heppner Stud
Mill, retiring in 1975
Survivors include his wife, at the
home and a son John, of Heppner

Fall*, Idaho, on July 6, 1927. to
Fred and Anna Jcmmctt He grew up
in the eastern Idaho area and in 1942
moved with his family to the Boise
VaRnj He served with (he U S
Navy in 1945-1946 then returned to
the Boise Valley where he married
Nita Greenwood on Nov 19.1949
The couple was later scaled at the
Idaho Falls EDS Temple
Mr Jcmmctt farmed and did
automotive machinist work in the
Boise area until 1980 when the fami
ly moved to |>exington He con
tinued to farm and do custom
combining
He was a loving and dedicated
husband and father He was loved
and respected by everyone who
knew him
He was a member of the Church
of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints
He was alvi a member of the Willow

than the love and affeciion held by
family, co-workers, and those one
touches in the course of the years one
toils at his chosen profession
And it was that love, respect and at
feet ion for the man that poured out last
Sunday when family, teachers (txxh
past and present), former students and
friends celebrated the retirement of
Dan Daltoso from his long-time posi
non as principal at Riverside High School
It was much as he had requested, no formal banquet, not a roast, no
huge table of gifts Well, almost
There was a hit of food prime rib for roost of us. at a white table cloth
restaurant hut there wasn't one big long tabic like a banquet And with
BMCC President Ron Daniels posing a "toast" and former |unior high
teacher Jim Ackley providing the entertainment via an audio tape Big
Bad Dan.'* it didn't look too much like a roast
,
There really was not a hig table of gifts Dan sort of expected a nice
fishing rod or something like thal You sec. in what little spare time he's
had from being a full-time school principal. Dan likes most to fish legend
has it that it’s on fishing trips that Dan is most effective in assisting new .
young, inexperienced teachers to develop those tine tuned skill* that he's
insisted his staff demonstrate
In retirement. Dan expects to enlarge those occasional fishing trips to
a full time avocation Bass, walleye, steclhead, he pursues them all And
until Sunday, only from the bank, or rarely, aboard some friends boat
What with one or more of his own children in college, and more to go.
Dan has not been one to collect expensive toys
When the reality of retirement began to sink in a sear or two ago. Dan
started to make small, periodic contnbuitons to a "boat fund" in the hopes
that someday he would be able to pursue his favorite quarry from his own
boat He even picked out the scry make and model, motor and trailer that
he would eventually own But the "boat fund" grew so slowly that to Dan
Daltoso on Sunday morning, it looked like it would be many more years
before he could use that special fishing rod his friends would surely get
him from the deck of his own Lund 'Rebel', powered by a 50 horse Merc
and trailcrcd on a new Calcons
This is the same man who came to Riverside in 1961 to teach and coach
ftxitball And teach and coach he did By 1966. Dan's Riverside High
School fixxhall team would win the state championship Shortly after. Ron
Daniels, then Riverside principal moved up to county superintendent and
Dan stepped in as principal Dan wouldn't let go of his love for sports
and served many years as the conference representative to the Oregon
School Athletics Association
This is the same man that throughout his career emphasi/ed discipline,
often meting out punishment on the spot in the form of pushups He is
a great believer in student involvement in not only athletics but in academics
as well A great adviKate of recognition of achievement, Dan insisted on
it for his students and for his teachers
That's why. when Dan expected a fancy, customized fishing rix) last
Sunday, he was disappointed
With so many triends each with a contribution expressing a small part
of their affection for the man. together totalling thousands of dollars, there
was no table laden with gifts There was only Dan's dream boat in the
parking lot. hitched to his pickup and the key in his hand With it went
the best wishes of an entire generation of an entire community tor a man
who measures up indeed
