Everyone ought I«* have a Cheatham
M ill Thai way you w«»uld understand
You see. we have this little herb
business You know, oregano, basil,
chive*, the stuff you cook with to nuke
iood taste good We grow it, dry it.
pack it in little jars and try lo sell u
We even print the labels directly on the
jars and build Ihc little wood box that
holds six different kinds in ease you
want to give somebody a really nice
gift
The herb business kind o f replaced
the wine business, you see
So what about the Cheatham M ill ’
W ell, after the herbs arc dried in a dryer «*f «*ur own design tthe secret
is lot* o f air and not very much heat, some days in Boardman it's plenty
h«*t without a heater) the leaves have to be stripped from the sicms You
can cat Ihc leases hut the stems are kind «*1 hard ami people don't like
to buy stems
There * two way* to strip the leave* from the stems You can beat a
handful against a N u rd or something and the leaves all fall o ff Bui that
breaks up the stems tix* and y«xi have to spend hours pic king the little pieces
o f stem out o f the leaves (X you can pick up one stem at a time with
one hand and pull it between the fingers o f the other hand That strips
Ihc leaves o ff and leaves the stem pretty much wh«ilc so you can throw
H away
Either way it lakes a lot o f time lo strip very much ihymc
Thinking I could use an old ham! crank tanning m ill up on an auction
block not King, I up and bought H I'm really dangerous ai an auctu<n sale
I guess ihai's why Francic lets me go to <*nc only every five years or so
I got my new treasure h«*mc to disc-over I was ihe proud owner o f a
not loo proud Cheatham M ill manufactured h> the Mason Campbell A
S«ins Co o f IX’ troit. for the John IX-erc Plow Co o f Portland. Spokane,
Seattle ami B«>isc I couldn't find a model number anywhere but it’ s about
' by 5 feet, stands 4 feet high, has a hig haml «ranked sprocket and a hag
ging attachment
And it was in much worse shape when 1 got it home than it looked to
be when the auctioneer was pleading for another bid Most things I gel
al an auction arc
O ff and on all summer. I ’ ve been repairin' replacin' and a paintin' in
the hopes to gel the thing to separate herb leaves from the stems
This morning it was time to locate a replacement screen that goes way
down in the bottom. Where the weed seed is screened out The original
was nearly rusted away
A lte r tittccn ph«*ne calls all across the nation I can tell yiui a lot more
about a Cheatham M ill
Munson Campbell A Sons Co must no longer exist A l least they don't
have a phone and ihey'rc not the same as M Campbell A Sons nor Camp
bell A Sons Manufacturing Co (they make marine fixtures mostly lor sail
boats) N>th o f IX’troit There's a screen manufacturer in Tcnnescc who
w ill gear up to make an exact replacement for aKiut $1.000 There's an
outfit in South Carolina that nukes a Cheatham M ill except they use that
for grinding recycled aluminum
And there's a place in Portland that w ill sell a piece o f screen that's
pretty close for about $40 At least that's a little hit less than the auctioneer
got
