Support Pioneer Humane Society
To the Editor
Thanks to newspaper coverage
and letters to the editor, the perilous
condition of Pioneer Humane Socic
ty finances this summer has finally
come to the attention of the public
The response has been gratifying,
our membership has risen from 200
to about 265 rhose memberships
ami contributions from certain in
divuluals in larger amounts, will
enable us to continue humane work
through January
Our goal is a stable, annually
renewing membership of at least 600
individuals a base budget of $500
per month To that eml wc shall con
tinue our membership drive
At the time wc nearly closed for
lack of funds, this summer, we had
44 members who could he counted
upon to renew, $9 in the checking
account and $5(X) in the emergency
account
fhe support wc have received, the
letters of encouragement, ami the in
crease in mem bership give us hope
that our volunteers will indeed l i
able to continue to serve the public
throughout 1940
Eor those who arc supporting our
work thank you For those who are
postponing or neglecting sending
their membership contribution we
are n*x tax supported Your donation
is tav deductible All involved in the
society's work are volunteers l-css
than five percent of the thousands of
people who ask us to help them, sup
port us Don't you believe you
should, just in case you need to call
us?

Sitting here on niy desk, umipened.
unmarked, not returned is a mail balloi
The issue is moot, the election is moo«,
the results will be meaningless except
to further polarize our community, so
the halUx remains untouched
I don't intend to write about how ill
adv ised it was to call the election in the
first place tan election in November on
an issue which was decided in (V
tober) Nor how pretentious it was to
believe that a referendum in Morrow
Count) would have any ctlcct at all on
a state w ide issue (le t's put the federal
budget on the ballot in Morrow Coun
tv Maybe we van balance the thing »
Nor how our elected representatives
were modvaled more bv their own re election ambitions than by their devo
tion to the public vers ice wc have already entrusted to them (Imagine the
County Court putting up every decision we expect them to make for a
popular vote I
W hat bothers me more than all those- things is ihc current, popular trend
toward increasing vixer participation How often have we heard some
political figure decry the low percentage of voter turn out "Only 27 per-
ccni of the voters casts ballots on the
issue Dial's terrible We must
do something to increase that percentage
The conventional wisdom is thai an election is better it a high prreen
lage of voters participate ami the conserve is also accepted as true an elec
tion is had or worse it the percentage ot participation is low Believing
that conventional wisdom, many lolks have expended much eltort to in
crease ihc percentage ot participation "Get out the vixe." is the buzz
word o! the day
And these mail ballots are the ultimate in the effort to increase viXcr
'participation It is no longer necessary to lx- present on election day. go
to your poling place ami mark a ballot With the mail ballot, vou have
to do very little Just wail until it'v delivered to your door, matk it at your
Icisuie right in your own home any time over a week or ten days ami then
drop it in the mail
•\m! it seems that the mail ballot has increased the percentage of v,xer
participation
Bui has ii improved the qualilv ot the results’ No Probably the quality
ot the results has declined
It 500 volets would go to the jvolls to vote and it 7«Hi would cast mail
ballots shouldn't we ask ourselves why ’ Some, of course, would be out
of town on election dav. some are physically infirm, some would have
any number of iXher reasons why they simply could not nuke it to the
polls on that particular day
Most, however, would lx- those tolks who cared so little about the issue
or candidate that they would not expend the little hit ot effort required
to go to the polls, hut since it was so easy they will cast a mail halhx
And on what basis do they make their decision? Whim, emotion, misin
formation or perhaps iust one little hit ot information "I like this guy.
his first name is the same as ms old uncle " I always vote ‘no.........I
don't know this tellow
Mv tincome) taxes are loo high " You know
the stult that prompts the uninformed, disinterested, casuul vixer
It d«x-s rvX appear to me that gmxl government conies from enticing max
imum numbers of voters to vote based on their casual whim II they do
not base the incentive to go to the polls, their mail in votes may well result
in more hail government than we can stand
