Support shown for Doherty and Kemp
To the Editor:
I would like to encourage
everyone in Morrow County to mail
m their recall petition» in vuppori of
Bill Doherty and Marcia Kemp
How nice it's going to be the next
time we have an opening on the
school hoard I presume everyone
that signed the recall petitions is will
ing and eager to serve on the hoard
The pay is so good (nothing) and the
hours of donated lime mounts up
fast As a past hoard member, I have
a few scars remaining and personal
ly know how things tan get turned
around by the time the public gets it
It's truly a thankless job
I put my trust in (he enlire hoard
as our dem ocratically elected
representative and refuse to be
swayed, in my opinion, by emotional
rabble rousers
Now is the lime for the entire
county to get behind our schools and
attempt to heal the wounds of the

tell you for sure that my niece's and
nephew'» children don't care if the
district hired legally eligible strike
breakers or not. etc All they want
is a warm body (here each morning
as a caring teacher
Things are lough all over I

Sometimes this isn't equitable to all,

(Once in a while, an idea for a story
is hard to come by That happened last
week, but Frances had one So tn spite
of the by line, this column is by
Frances Glenn )
The days arc shorter, the evenings
cooler. cxMinty fairs open everywhere
That can only mean one thing summer
is coming to a close It always amazes
me how quickly the summer can go by
I have »0 many things to do during the
summer months but I never seem to
have enough summer to do them all
The end of summer means sclxx»l
H> Ed Glenn
must he about to start again I have
started school now for 33 years Like
an old fire horse who's ready to run
when he hears a hell clang when the mornings are crisp and fall is in the
air. I’m ready to go hack to the classroom
I remember the five years I took off to have my family The first autumn
with no classroom was one of the hardest I have ever had to endure
was like an alcoholic on withdrawal watching young students climbing
aboard the yellow busses I wanted so desperately to he back in the
classroom, putting up bulletin hoards, preparing lessons for eager young
minds, renewing acquaintances with my students and meeting new ones
I don't think I ever really enjoyed any of those autumns I was not teaching
II was only when my own children started school and I could return to
the classroom did I enjoy another one
Like all the years before. I am eagerly awaiting the start of a new school
year I am already making plans for my bulletin boards I have started
to write some lesson plans ihal will utilize the schooling I had this sum
mer and have bought a new blouse or two I’m counting the day* until
the students arrive and I will have them in my room
This summer I spent three weeks in Salem with teachers from fifteen
of the western states It was one of the most educational summers I have
had as an educator In several of inir group sessions when wc talked about
our districts/schools I felt proud of the education that was taking place
here in Morrow County The first week at the seminar was spent on new
technology in education I was one of the more experienced in my group
Because of the foresight of our district I was familiar with video discs,
hypcrcard. long distance learning via m»xJcm and satellite systems, basic
word processing and dala base prixcssing Where some of the participants
said their school districts had barely scratched the surface of nxxlcrn
technology. I was able to say (hat my district was willing for our students
to he competitive in the nxxlcrn world Of course, there were other districts
that had everything in the way technological gadgets (like Park City, Utah
and Kamiamia School. Honolulu, Hawaii) I am glad my schixil district
is progressive
Other topics that we talked about included images of teachers, develop
ing critical thinking skills, co-operative education, scarcity of teachers (this
is quite real in some states and tn some areas).
I’m eager to begin to apply some of my summer's work in nn classrixim
this coming school year
Along w ith the eagerness this year I also have a bit of trepidation I will
be having a new principal and the unknown always presents questions
My previous principal was the only one I have had here in Morrow Coun
ty and wc worked well together I knew how he wanted things done, our
educational philosophy meshed, and I knew I could count on him for sup
port for the various projects I had my students do He encouraged me to
enter my students in contests and make it possible for them compete <>ies
lions go through my mind about my new principal What changes suit lie
make in the educational philosophy of the building'1 Dixrs he consider
academic interscholastic competition worthwhile? What basic changes cKx's
he have in mind for our students? I can expect change, changes will be
made The uncertainty for me is what’’ Change is .1 characteristic of life
Without change there is no life, so change is not all bad Many changes
are good.
-
I am also apprehensive about the new teachers in our building One w ill
he teaching our daughter Another will be teaching a class I helped develop
in my dcpartnxrnt As department head. 1 feel a sense of responsibility
for how well that class is taught by a brand new teacher Riverside High
Sch«x»l was lucky Wc lost only a few teachers this year, not nearly so
many as some other schixds But I'm a little nervous about that
I have a little apprehension about the board and the administration With
two new members and others under lire, the board may not notice what
we're really doing down in the classrixvms all across the county There
arc two new key people in the District office and each will be feeling their
way for a while
So as a new school year is about to begin I am eager but also apprehen
sivc I want the year to be a positive one with great things happening in
our district I want Morrow County to regain its reputation as one ot the
better districts in the state I want students leaving our schools to go to
college or to enter the work force prepared to compete well with other
students I am (earful that too many of us can not. or will not. put the
past behind u s and begin anew to accomplish this This is why I am ap
prehensive I. lor one will put the past in perspective, learn by it and try
to make the future better That is why I am eager
