Starting July 17. county offices of
USDA's Agricultrual Stabilization
and Conservation Serv ice once again
will accept bids for the Conservation
Reserve Program (CRP) The pro
gram removes eligible cropland out
of farming for 10 years and
designates the acreage to permanent
vegetative cover
ASCS officials acclaim the pro
gram 's success thus far, and remind
producer« of the 1990 closing
"T he total acreage enrolled in the
program has reached more than 30
million acres," said ASCS ad
ministrator Keith Bjcrkc "The pro
gram has become (he largest long-
lerm cropland retirement program in
U S history."
Morrow County farmland arc in
cluded in the CRP total to date.
Eligible CRP acres include erodi-
hle cropland, cropped wetlands,
filter strips, and cropland subject to
scour erosion. The program has
authorization to accept acreage on
ly through 1990. Mr Bjcrkc said
The voluntary CRP authorizes
each farmer to receive up to $50.000
per year based on a per acre rental
rate and the number of acres under
the 10-year c o n tra ct. Rental
payments are made annually to pro
ducers with approved contracts, and
cost-share payments are made to
provide one-half the cost of the per
manent

cover
establishment.
