Queen and Court traveled to the
Portland Rove Fevtival Parade on-
June 9 and 10 in Portland
Queen Nancy Hailey, and
Princevvev Shaw na Cash and Jodec
Ashheck were up bright and early
Saturday morning, beginning their
day at 4 a m The horse» were kept
at the ftmland Meadow» Rave Track
and had been wavhed and cleaned
thoroughly before being taken to the
staging area near the Lloyd Center
The flower» were brought to the
staging area by Ralph Martin at b 15
a m The beautiful bouquet» con
sisted of carnation», orchids and
rove», vary ing in pink hue» The rib
bon used w a» a shiny silver A »mall
corsage like arrangement was plac
ed on the center ot the breast collars
A silver ribbon with streamer» was
added to the top of each horses tail
The Court was escorted to the
ludgtng area at 7:20 a m The parade
began at 10 a m tiding through the
cotisium Princess Jodec Ashheck
explained that there were two
women judges and one man They
touched the horses with their hands
to check on cleanliness and even in
spected the bottom of Queen Nan

The Court was assigned a number

p m at the Multnomah Athletic-
Club, where a lovely cold cut and
salad luncheon was served Parade
awards were given out to three
places the Queen and Court Division

was the Pendleton Round I'p Court
Even though the Morrow County
Court did not place, the experience
and promotion of Eastern Oregon
was worth the trip Several times
throughout the parade the Court
members were asked where Morrow
County was "It is very important
that advertising and promotion of
our area is given and these young
ambassadors arc doing a terrific job
for Morrow C o u n ty ," slates

"W e often times forget that along
with each appearance, we also
educate and prunvotc to the best of
our abilities." The Court handed out
bumper suckers for the St Patrick'*
Day Celebration in 1990. plus pens
with the Fair & Rodeo dates on
them, as they made personal contact
1970 was the last time a Court
representing Morrow County rode in
the Rose Parade
The Court's next gathering will be
to join the Wagon Train coming to
Heppner on July 3 They are look
ing for authentic costumes that they
can bonow for this one day ride and
it you would like to volunteer your
centennial costume of that era.

The 4th of July celebration at
Hoardnian will be an exciting ex
perience for the Court The Roger
Cashs' will host the Court for a
backyard barbecue also boats will he
available so the Court can enjoy
sour - water frolics in the afternoon
Anderson released from jail
A 22-year old Heppner woman
was ordered released on her own
recognizance on June 7, follow ing a
day-long hearing in Morrow Coun
ty Circuit Court
Paula Anderson, who is charged
with murder, abuse of a corpse and
concealing the birth of an infant in
connection with the discovery of
bodies of two apparent full term in
lants ol Heppner arid lone earlier this
year, was released to the custody of
relatives
Morrow County Circuit Court
Judge Robert Abrams also schedul
ed a June 19. hearing to hear pre '
trial motions in the (wo cases which
arc set for trial in Heppner on July
17, and August 28. 1989

Starr submits resignation HHS Principal to retire

to the school board
He has been offered the position
of Superintendent of Schools for
Central l.inn, a district of K00
students in grades K 12 Central
Linn is located between Albany and
Eugene "This is a goal of mine
(superintendent), I have been work
ing toward th is", says Starr
Mr Starr has been in the Hcpp
ner area for 17 years Four of those
years were as math teacher and
coach at Meppner High Sch<x>l. nine
years at lone as principal and four
years as assistant superintendent tor

Starr and his wife. Deena. have
two sons and grandchildren they will
be leaving behind in this area One-
son teaches at Spray and the other
has just accepted a position in the
Pendleton area, moving from
Board man
"W e arc excited about leaving,
but sorry to be leaving Morrow
County.” says Starr
The hoard will act on his rcsigna
tion at the school board meeting.

Jim Bier, Heppner High School
principal, has submitted his resigna
tion to the Morrow County School
Board
Jim has been in the education
business for 32 years He began his
career in Halfway, Oregon, which
is now a combination ol Richland
and Halfway schools and is called
Pine luigle. where he worked for
five years He then went to Her
miston for seven years and moved to
Heppner where he has been for the
last 20 years.
Jim and his wife, Pauline, an
employee ot the Bank ol Eastern
Oregon, have not planned anything
spec ific for the future other than they
would like to stay in (he area Jim
likes to hunt and fish, of which he
has plans to do much more He has
always wanted to retire from the
education business "before it got to
be a chore" He still cnioys his work
and the kids hut wanted to end his
career on a positive note, which he
feels he is doing
At 55 years of age, Jim is too
young to retire completely, but he is
unsure of what the future will hold
He and his wife have three
children, all away from home
A one vehicle accident sometime
between 10 p m Saturday night and
10 a m Sunday morning when the
vehicle was found, killed the lone
occupant of a car, 19 miles south ol
Heppner on Highway 207
Sammic Pauline G cier, 45,
Haines, formerly of Pendleton, died
at the scene of ihe accident

Harnett given special recognition
Morrow County residents showed
their appreciation of Rachel Harnett
last Wednesday by recognizing her
many years of collecting and
cataloging historical data
Rachel is of pioneer stock and a
native of Morrow County. She was
bom to Henry and Charlotte Schcrt
Zinger on the homestead on Rhea
Creek Henry came to the county at
the age of 16 in 1877. He married
Charlotte Shipley, daughter of Or
Lewis Shiplcv. in 1905 He
homesteaded on Rhea Creek from
1882 on the farm which is still in the
familv

Rachel spent her growing up years
in Morrow County later, she (aught
school and she married Marion
Harnett, who was on the police force
in lehanan. Oregon They had a son,
Melvin, who now lives in Walla
Walla Following the death of her
husband in 1938. Rachel returned to
Heppner She helped set up the Mor
row County Museum and served
faithfully as its curator until her
retirement in 1981 She still helps as
a volunteer and offers a wealth of in
form ation concerning fam ily
histones and other historical facts
about the county
