A Common
Mistake
We just read a comment "When all
the big trees arc gone, there will only
he little trees." It was made by an II
year-old in support of the spotted owl
We think that this young person was
making the same common mistake that
most adults make And they make (hat
mistake when talking about (he spotted
owl, the Exxon Valdez, the China
Resolution, the school situation and
their least favorite (or favorite)
politician.
Things will no< always he as tltey arc
right now
Just this last spring. Framie and I
had occasion to carefully examine our own position, past, present and
future Some aspects of the present were mu too desirable and we serious
ly considered a change of scenery Bui we looked at the past fifteen years
we've lived in Morrow County and listed the way things have changed
¡just in that time
W c'sc seen several County Judges come and go, the PGE plant con
structed. the town of Boardman grow from 400 to 1400 and the price of
wheat bounce up and down and up again
Applying that past history to the future, we realized that just as today
is not the same as (he past was. so too the future will not be the same
as today
Many things, circumstances, conditions will change in the future, some
of them making a dramatic change in our lives
The common mistake our young friend made is that little trees have a
habit of growing into big trees True, it may take a while, hut even 15
years makes a big difference in the life of a tree The pines in our hack
yard were very little live Christmas trees just eight and seven years ago
Now they're much taller than the house
The old adage. "Tim e heals all wounds." really has a great deal going
for it Wc think that philosophy reflects amithcr observation of ours O f
Mother Nature has a way of taking care of herself It truly is amazing
(he way the natural order of things puts many things right that man has
messed up The Tillamook Bum is one example that comes to mind
Yellowstone Park and the Valdez oil slick arc two current examples of
man messing up ihai in due time Mother Nature will heal
But there are a whole range of things that nuin has created, that it is
up to nun to change when they go bad The ethics o f Congressmen, for
example, is a nun nude problem that nun must correct. There seems to
he some progress on that front right now Some would argue that it is too
little too late, hut sometimes it's like growing a tree, it lakes time
Take any politician, local, state or national that is ineffective, incompe
tent. or down right crooked I some folks say that is all of them) Politi
cians. like oil slicks, have a habit of going away. In our country wc just
vote 'em out. some places they assassinate 'em Either way they don't last
forever.
None of us can do much about the w ay Mother Nature restores a forest
Yes, there arc thinning techniques, fertilizer and specie selection, but the
job is basically hers.
With nun nude problems, wc can do a great deal abimt correcting them
In fact, since wc created the problem it is entirely up to us to correct it
And the point is some of us will Always and every time Sometimes it's
easy and quick Sometimes it takes much longer and more dedication But
somehow, some time, all of man’s problems arc corrected by man Things
neser stay the same as they arc today.
And ihe mistake is to assume they will.
The great challenge for each of us is to be part o f the solution There
is not a great deal we tan do to speed up the little tree's journey to become
a big one Bui there is a great deal we can do about when and where and
how to cut the big ones It is entirely up to us as to decide how much and
jto whom we pay taxes, how and by whom wc are governed, when, where
and whether wc educate our children
None of things will always he as they arc now. We should not assume
they will he They will change, jusi as surely as the tree grows Each of
us should he a ray of sun
