Guyers to celebrate 50th anniversary
I saw the firsi elm leaf beetles of
the year last month, and the first
eggs on the leaves last week. It is
about time to spray the elm trees to
control this noxious pest
Elm leaf beetles are the reason that
all the elm trees turn brown about
halfway through the summer The
adult and larval stages both feed on
the leaves, skeletonising them Their
feeding can defoliate a tree and
weaken it.
The beetle is about 1/5 inch long
It is a light yellow to a brownish
green color, alomst a chartreuse,
with several black stripes down its
hack The eggs are laid on the under
side of the leaves of the elm tree.
They are bright yellow and arc laid
in double rows
The tunc to spray the tree is when
all the eggs have hatched, so ex
amine the leaves of the tree for the
opened egg cases Or you can wait
until you begin to see feeding
damage in the tree
The young immatures feed on on
ly one surface of the leaf at a time,
resulting in a lace;, look to the leaf
Trees take on a yellowish or
brownish look, and leaves begin to
fall off. If the beetles are not con
trolled. the tree will defoliate com
pletely by midsummer
Adult beetles are quite active and
mobile They will fly to new.

feed It may be necessary to apply
two or more sprays per year to con
trol damage.
Most elm trees arc beyond the
capability of the homeowner to
spray, and require professional help
Two chemicals available to the
homeowner are registered carhary I
(Sevin) and Orthene Read the label
carrfuly and follow label directions
Another pest of elm trees is the
elm bark beetle. I have not seen any
hark beetles in Heppner. yet This
is the insect that vectors l)uich elm
disease, a fungal disease that kills the
tree While Dutch elm disease is
known to be in eastern Oregon. I
have not seen it here either
Control of hark beetles is not
recommended except as a procedure
to supprevs Dutch elm disease
There is no evidence to indicate that
sprays or injections will stop the
spread of the disease, or will effec
tively control the beetle
These two pests make owning an
elm tree difficult. They arc not

ment Stations have two tours in this
area in June (a third tour, that of the
Hernuston Experiment Station is
already past) Wednesday. June 14
is the tour of the Pendleton Experi
ment Station. Thursday, June 15 is
the Sherman County Experiment
Station (our at Moro Both tours start
at 8 a m and last all day They are
worth the effort to attend, even for
the novice.
On June 16, Friday, at 4 p m we
lour this year's winner of the Con
servation Farm of the Year award
At 6 p m we enjoy a barbecue This
year's winner is Starvation Farms,
and the tour and barbecue will be at
Irvin Rauch’s house We encourage
attendees to bring a salad or dessert
and to call the Extension office to
coordinate the food The steak is free
and everyone is invited
