The purpose of their trip is to
gather pledges for the United
Grocers to support Doemhecher
Hospital in Ponland They are do
ing this solely on their own funds
Jim and Jeff own two grocery
stores, one in Mill City and the »Hhcr
in Slayton Kacti United Grocer store
member has been asked to do a fun
draiser of their choice to support the
hospital and this is the method they
base chosen This is something they
have wanted to do as lather and son
and they decided to incorporate the
two to accomplish an end
Jeff is a member of the National
Guard and they have offered their
assistance in this endeavor
The Girods were in Heppner Fri
day and were leaving for Walla
Walla and will be followed by the
hack up car. Jim's wife, Chcne and
her mother. IVan Robertson After
that. Jim and Jeff will be on their
own.
The men will be carrying sleeping
bugs and packs and hope to camp out
as the weather allows aixl meet peo
pie who hopefully will host them
They have been averaging 90
nules per day but plan to continue at
an average of 75 miles per day After

Fields surveyed by Dick Jackson
of the Oregon Department of
Agriculture last week showed an in
crease in Russian wheat aphid
{RWAl activity in Morrow County
laist week's survey showed an
average infestation of nearly 2% in
the four fields examined here That
is up from a less than I % infestation
the week before One of the fields
had 5% infestation
The economic threshold for RWA
in wheal can be as low as 5%.
depending on yield expectations and
the cost of control
In addition to wheal fields, the
survey teams arc examining CRP
acreage for the RWA In Morrow
County, the aphid is at nearly 5% in
testation in CRP Although the
RW A populations are higher there,
they are not expected to adversely af
fect the CRP grass stands
Small migrations of aphid can oc
cur anytime in the year that the
weather warms enough Heavy
flights of aphid arc not expected un
til late May. however Cropland that
borders CRP fields is no more at risk
lor infestation than cropland several
miles away
Winter wheat should be mature
enough to tolerate a 20% infestation
by then Spring wheut, however,
will be much more susceptible
