To the Editor
I have served on the M orrow
County Medical Board for the past
su months At the March 6 meeting.
I resigned from the Board because
o f a strong disagreement which oc
curred during the Executive Session
U n fo rtu n a te ly , th is leaves the
Medical Board w ith m» representa
non from Boardman I urge our
County Commissioners to appoint,
as soon as possible, tw o persons
from the Boardman area to serve as
Medical Board members Adequate
representation o f all our local com
munities is a necessity i f the Board
is to function in a manner which is
fair to all citizens o f M orrow C«>un
ty When the County Court «Joes fill
the Medical Board vacancies. I
would like the new members to he
aware o f my misgivings regarding
the future of the Boardman C linic
W ith the ailoption o f a new
management agreement between St
Anthony Hospital and M orrow
County, the Boardman C linic w ill no
longer be leased directly to St A n
thony Instead, it w ill he managed by
the County Medical Administrator in
the same manner as our other
medical facilities I am concerned
about this situation for several
reas«>ns First. St Anthony Hospital
has been operating a clinic in
Um atilla which is in competition
w ith the Boardman C linic. Second,
while the County Medical Ad
mimstrator is responsible to carry
out the p»>licics o f the Board, he is
also an employee o f, and responsi
ble to. St Anthony Hospital
The Medical Board has been t«»ld
by St Anthony's representative that
they kvst money during their lease o f
the Boardman C lin x This is certain
ly understandable considering that
St Anthony was operating not only
the Boardman and Um atilla C linics
in compctitKm with each other hut.
until recently, the Hcmusion C linic
as well It should als«» he pointed out
that St Anthony's recent survey
about the Boardman C linic »as n<*t
sent to any residents o f Irrigon
I believe that our clinic in Board
man can meet the needs o f l«xal
citizens with a minimum expenditure
o f tax dollars i f the County Medical
Administrator is given clear mstruc
tarns to pursue the well being o f the
Boardman C linic in the same man
ncr as has been «lone w nh the Hcpp
ncr C linic There can he no excuse
foe the Medical Hoard to neglec t one
clinic while nurturing the «»ther Ccr
tainlv the successful operation o f the
Boardman C linic «sill require «omc
management skills, hut I believe that
our Medical Adm inistrator has pro
ved himself quite capable o f the task,
provided that his abilities arc n«»t
shackled The Board must recognize
that there exists a potential for con
flict o f interest with St Anth«»nv
Hospital. andC«*unt> medical policy
must ensure that all dcciM«»ns which
concern the Boardman C linic are
v ile ly based upon the best interests
o f l«xal citizens
