Letters to the Editor
Board asked to bring harmony and
unity to Morrow County
To the Editoi
The Morrow County School
Board ha» adopted the god of con
taining c o i l Thu is an admirable
goal for any governing hoard of a
public body It should m*. however,
be the single, overriding goal of a
hoard responsible for the education
of the children of Morrow County
If earned to its logical conclusion,
the end result of this goal would be
to close schools and not have any
costs at all
The uncompromising pursuit of
this goal has brought the teacher con
tract negotiations to a halt The
hoard does not seem to feel that it
it their responsibility to negotiate
They want to dictate a contract on
their terms alone This refusal to
negotiate is resulting in open strife
and confrontation It is up to the
citizens of Morrow County to con
vince their elected board to negotiate
a settlement with their teachers
If the board thinks that dictating
their own contract would he winn
ing, they arc sadly mistaken The
board is responsible for educating
our children If they, by their ac
tions. continue to drive away good
experienced teachers, it is our
children that suffer If they continue
to offer substandard wages, the best
new teachers will continue to turn
their backs on Morrow County
Why would any young teacher want
to corot into a district with such tur
moil and low wages to boot'1 It is our
children who will suffer and our
single minded hoard is responsible
Surely their reputation would be bet
ter served by bringing harmony and
unity into Morrow County instead of
discord and strife

“ The future of Morrow County is
in our schools today ” Great cliche'
isn't it? It's also fact Here's another
one Morrow County is a scry small
segment of the world and in this day
and age we have to know what is giv
ing on and how to interrelate
throughout the world We can no
longer hang on to our small towns
with small town ideology and expect
to function in the world society Our
community needs intelligent and up
to date thought just to survive We
also need people who know how to
communicate these ideas and work
with people for the betterment of
their community Where arc our
young pcxtplc going to Icam these
skills? That's right In our schools
with, hopefully, very good teachers
who can meet their needs
Some of the students in our
schools will not stay in Morrow
County They will move to many
places throughout the world, but
they will still need the skills we must
provide in order to function produc
tively. Those that do stay are the
future of our county Doesn't it
make sense to give them the best
education possible* Believe me. we
need it Don't sell Morrow County
education short

Umatilla resident moves to Morrow
Co. partially because of schools
To the Editor:
I am writing out of my concern for
the future of public education in
Morrow County. I brought my fami
ly to Boardman in 197ft We came
here, instead of staying in Umatilla
where we owned a home, primarily
because we believed that the schools
here would offer a better education
for our children I believe that this
has been true I thought the people
of Morrow County held their schools
in high regard and were willing to
support them
I still believe that the people of
Morrow County are willing to sup
port their schools. I believe that they
sec value in trying to compensate
their experienced teacher with a
salary and benefits comparable with
other districts around them I believe
that the people are not willing to let
their school's educational quality slip
away because their experienced
teachers arc leaving for better pay
and more trust in their abilities
In watching the actions of the
school hoard in these needlessly pro
longed negotiations. I have become
convinced that they arc not acting in
the best interest of Morrow Coun
ty. I do not pretend to know why
they arc taking their stance of refus
ing to negotiate Is it possible, as Mr
Don McElligotf has suggested, that
they are try ing to "bust the union” ?
Why would they try to do that ’
Aren't unions and associations of
common infercst and goals an in
tcgral part of American life? How
would our farmers like it it a public
broard tried to "bust'' the Oregon
Wheat League or the Oregon Cat
tleman's Association’’ How would
our merchants like to have the
Chamber of Commerce under at
lack? If our school board thinks that
the Morrow County Education
Association is the only union in Mor
row County, they are sadly deluded
If the school board can not sec
beyond their prejudice against the
teacher’s association and negotiate
a contract in good faith. I suggest
that they give up their positions,
positions of public trust, and let pciv
pic who arc really concerned with
education take their places

Stand behind our teachers
To the Editor
This letter is for Morrow Coun
ty's parents I read a letter that men
turned Bill Doherty, a current board
member and his stews on Teachers
contract negotiations. He said that
the public is 9 to I in favor of the
boards position It also stated he ex
pressed a "let 'em go on strike” at
titude This really angered me
If this is true, then I think those
nine out of 10 people should
volunteer one or two hours just once
to he a teacher's aide or helper I feel
(hen they will be able to understand
what our under paid teachers must
deal with 190 days a year These
teachers have many problems and
situations to deal with everyday.
How many of you could handle
20-30 children a day and the pro
blems that do arise ’ Some of these
children do have attitude problems
and some of the behavior and
language problems arc very unreal
In an*«her letter in Monday’s E.O.
it said teachers make $179 a day If
that is also true. I feel they deserve
it and they cam every penny of it
They work long and hard for their
money They are at school long
before our children get there and
they arc there after they arc gone
How many nights do you think they
spend hours of their own time at
home preparing assignments and
grading papers for our children? My
7 year old daughter told me she
thinks teachers should get $100 an
hour
There is one teacher at Heppner
Elementary School that I had the
pnviledge of helping a few after
noons last year I feel she is greatly
underpaid That is Ms Cherry Web
ber She must deal with 40-50 new
5 and 6 year olds every Fall. For
many it's the first tunc away from
mothers for any length of time She
treats them all anti loves (hem all like
they were her own She is always
there with smiles and hugs and
words of praise She takes turns pro-
viding snacks with her own money
just like the parents She makes
school a happy and special place
every day All the teachers do the
best they can with students and
parents alike Most all the teachers
I know go out of their way to help
our children They will stay late and
work with them if the students need
the help Better attitudes from
parents would also help out alot I'm
sure many teachers have heard
"Johnny wouldn't do that” or have
had parents who have refused to hear
that Johnny needs help w ith reading
or spelling, etc We as parents need
to face the facts That our children
arc exactly that “ children". They
will do anything and everything that
they think they can get away with
We need to start listening and bclicv
ing what adults tell us or where will
these children that people think arc
angels and can do no wrong end up
I also want to say that if things
don't work out and the teachers
strike even tf this is not what they
want. I will he one of the first ones
that will not send my kids to school
Why send them to teachers tJie hoard
brings in It will not help out our
teachers any I would be willing to
stay home with my children and pnv
bahly pick up a sign and join the
picket line I hope there are many
other parents that feel this way We
all need to join together and voice
our opinions. Stand behind the
teachers We need the teachers we
have. They don't need us.

comfortable replying even though

teachers What can we. as a com
munity do? Speaking as an in
dividual. I suggest replacing apathy
with empathy. Call teachers, ad
ministrators. board members to
research the reasons l-earn to real
ly listen to each other Visit
classrooms Go to the source with
your complaints and follow up En
courage teachers to share who they
are and their concerns for our youth
out in the community Know your
facts before trying to influence
others [>i everything possible to
make sure our young people are Icar
ning everything they need to know
to someday be a part of this or
another community There's an old
Indian saying "Don't judge so
meone until you've walked a mile in
