Young mother learns she has leukemia

The plight of ■ 19 year -old mother
with leukemia has become a regional
concern in Central Oregon, and
we're hoping you can help by tell
ing her story to everyone in Oregon
Janet Asher, the mother of a
5-month-old son. learned she had
leukemia the day heforc Thanksgiv
ing It is the same kind of disease
that afflicted Chris Patrick, the
young man from Redmond who.
with the help of Oregonians, receiv
ed a life-saving bone marrow
transplant earlier this year
Until a week ago. doctors offered
no hope for Janet's life, and family
and friends were told not to expect
her to live A week ago. we learned
a hone marrow transplant could

make all the difference in the world
Efforts arc underway locally to
raise the S270.000 for Janet because
she and her husband do not have in
surance Tom Asher is a college stu
dent who works at a gas station to
make ends meet
This couple could use your help,
especially since the family has suf
fered so many hardships Janet's
mother passed away three years ago.

At the recent land use hearing on
Secondary lands held at the State
Capitol a former Chairman and a
former Director of the land Conser
vation and Development Commis
sion both made statements to the ef
fect that LCDC should base their
decisions on the "quality” rather
than on the "volum e" of the
tcstimoncy The clear inference was
that only testimony from the
bureaucrats and special interest
groups should he considered, and
that the testimony from the "pco
pie" should he ignored
Oser 400 Oregonians (raveled
from all parts of the state to attend
this hearing and almost all of the
testimony was against the
unreasonable and tyrannical restric
tions proposed to control the use of
their lands These are the same peo
ple who will elect the next
legislature
l-ct these bureaucrats be remind
ed that wc still live in a democracy
governed by the "people" and it is
the "people" who will ultimately
make the decision ahout what hap
pens to their land

Virginia Atkins
Virginia Grace Atkins. 69. of Her
mi «on. died at her winter home in
Apache Junction. Aru Dec 20 She
had been ill with cancer for several
months
Mrs Atkins was bom in lone Jan
6. 1919. to Elmer and Fannie
(juodall Griffith She was a 1936
graduate of lone High School She
attended Linfield College, the
University of Nevada in Reno, and
received her ma«er a degree in
education from the University of
Alaska in Anchorage
She lived in Alaska for many
years, teaching at various schools
She retired in 1978 from the Fort
Richardson School in the Anchorage
school system
After retirement they sold their
home at Eagle River Alaska, and
moved to Hcrmi«on. but spent the
winters in Arizona
Mrs Atkins was a member of the
Episcopal Church for many years
and a 52-year member of Ruth
Locust Chapter No 32. Order of
Eastern Star, at Heppner
She was also a member of the
Retired Teachers Association, the
Chugiak Gem and Mineral Society
of Apache Junction, the Alaskan
lapidary Society, the Northwest
Gem and Mineral Society and the
Hat Rock Gem and Mineral Socie
ty. She was an active participant in
each of these organizations and also
was active in the promotion of
education of youth, wherever she
lived
Survivors include her husband,
Robert Amos. Apache Junction, a
son. Paul E Miller of (Juartsite.
Anz.; two sisters, Katherine Lind-
strom. lone, and June J Haugen.

Griffith, lone, a granddaughter. Lon
and a step-granddaughter Apnl, both
students of the University of Arizona
at Tempe

tions in yean and maybe that explains
a lot of things This year I have a few
I resolve not to take cheap shots at
sacred cows laut fall I wrote a tongue
in-cheek article about a local subject
and nearly loat a good fnend over a all
My promise is to be more sensitive to
those things my fnends are sensitive to
I resolve not hi bifurcate the relative
There are really very few things that

in between We recently wrote about
"safe" and "unsafe" and the relative
ground in between We hope that you
will call us if we argue that something is either all had or all good without
acknowledging that there's a little bit of hoth in everything (see what I
mean?)
I resolve not to compute the alpha average I plus 3 plus 8 equals 12.
divided by 3 equals an average of 4 Bui a new baby, a fat man. an old
woman and a high school football player do not add up to an "average"
person Dont' let me generalize ahout an "average" thai simply cannot
he calculated
I resolve not to assume positional metamorphosis I have been guilty
of saying "he was a pretty decent guy until they made him hovs " More
often I've said, "you can take a perfectly reasonable, sensible fellow and
put him in political office and he turns to s— ." W’c all know that just isn't
true When others make decisions that wc disagree with, we too often
ascribe the fact to a character defect in the other person My resolve is
to he more tolerant of those who hold positions that require dec isions, to
more carefully examine the decision rather than call the decision maker

Finally . 1 resolve to hit the nail on the head I've been guilty of being
mealy mouthed, under handed and have side stepped the issue You may
«ill wonder, from time to time, just what is the point, but only when that
is the point When the point is something else. I'll try to make it straighi
out and not heat around the hush
