The First Annual Alumni Basket-
hall Tournament held Iasi week end
was termed a “ huge success", ac­
cording to Stuart Dick, instigator of
this first time event
Players and others met at the Elks
Club Friday night for a pregam e
program where many dissertatk»ns
were given on the merits of the team,
team m em bers, etc , m ostly
humorous Games were played Fri­
day night. Saturday and the chani
piotuhip games on Sunday .
Winners of this year's champion
ship game on Sunday was (he team.
" I VHP- 1982” and second place was
the team of "1972-73“ .
The event gathered together ap­
proximately HO haskethall players
from Oregon. Washington. Califor
nia and Alaska A large number of
spectators, parents, grandparents
and children were present to cheer
on their favorite team Many of these
pe»*ple probaby never dreamed they
would see their kids, or gran
dkids, play haskethall again Well,
they did. and it is doubtful they were
disappointed Many of them still had
the fire they showed while playing
high school haskethall
The main object of the tournament
was to raise money for local youth
actisities and approximately $2200
was taken in The programs ear
marked this year for the funds are
primarily Babe Ruth, soccer, and
Colt basketball. "T his is not ex­
clusively for the use of these pro
gram s," says Dick, "funds will he
available for «nher worthwhile pro­
jects
A Heppner Yinith Activity Com­
mission. made up of the captains of
the teams, will act as a hoard to
allocate the funds for the youth pro­
grams Anyone interested in or hav
ing use for funds may contact Stuart
Dick or Pal Sweeney for more
information
A tentative date for 19K9 has hern
set for December 29 11. hopefully
without interference with high
school sports or other Christmas
activities
Dick says they have some exciting
new ideas for next year and welcome
new ideas
Ken Slookey was the winner of
this year's 'Slam Dunk' contest with
hts high Hying dunk
Next year the committee hopes to
have a three-nomi «-ontest to add to
the interest
