T o ihe Editor
Oregonians for Safety Bell Use is
(he committee supporting Ballot
Measure 3 in the November general
election
If approved by Oregon voters on
November 8, ballot Measure 3 will
require the use o f safety belts by
drivers and passengers in most
vehicles.
What difference can a safety belt
law make? The National Highway
T r a ffic S afety Adm in istration
repons that, in the 32 states with
adult safety hell laws. 6,600 lives
have been saved as a result o f the
laws.
In Oregon, nine out o f ten people
killed in traffic accidents in 19*6
were not wearing safety belts A c
cording to the Oregon Medical
Association, the uifet\ belt law amid
redo* e inere. critical and fatal truf
fic in/unrs in Oregon b\ nearly 50%
In our campaign messages, we
will not dispute (he fact that a safety
belt law is government regulation
We contend the regulation o f a safe
ty belt law is worth it to save lives
The fact is. the most effective way to
get people to buckle up is to make
it a law
Governor Neil Goldschmidt, chair
o f our committee, put it this way.
’ The lafety bell law » i II ut\e livei
That'% worth doing "
If you have any questions, please
call Nan Heim at 243-6755 Thank
you for your time and attention to
this important, life saving measure
