RUSSIAN W HEAT APHID
The Russian Wheat Aphid RWA)
vs as first discovered here in Morrow
County last year in several wheat
fields It was watched closely
throughout the winter
This spnng. after several dren
ching rains, the aphid disappeared
It died Entomologists suspect that it
contracted a dread aphid disease and
died They have no date to support
the thesis, however And we can not
count on springs like this last one
with it’s excellent moisture every
year.
The RWA does not do well in ihe
midwest and eastern states, and it is
probably due to the dampness there
it is also less o f a problem in ir
rigated fields
This demonstrates that the RWA
is susceptible to biological control,
however Biological control uses the
pests own natural enemies to control
it. and is often the most effective,
long range method It is also the
cheapest
Fourteen western slates, the
USDA. and Canada arc cooperating
in an effort to obtain biological con
trol agents for the RWA This past
spring. Dr Victor East op lone o f the
world's foremost aphidologists). Dr
Klaus Carl from Canada, and several
USDA scientists travelled to eastern
Turkey looking for natural enemies
o f the RW A About twelve were
found
The twelve species o f natural
enemies were brought to the USDA
European Parasite l-ab in Paris
where they are now in culture Susan
Holbert. an entomologist at Parma.
Idaho, has recently received a few
species at her lab and will be rear
ing them for release soon
It is just this type o f program
which holds the most promise for
control o f the RWA

Jorgensens and Weems Co-Grand Marshalls
of Irrigon Watermelon Festival

Margaret and Finest Jorgensen
and Ted and Eunice Weems have
been selected as Co-Grand Marshals
o f the August 20 annual Im gon
W atermelon Festival
" I t is quite an honor to he chosen
as Grand M arshal," said Margaret
‘We arc very pleased about i t ."
The Jo rg e n sen s have been
dedicated to the Irrigon community
for twenty eight year*.
Margaret is a Lioness, an Eastern
Star member and plays an active roll
in the Stokes I ami mg Senior Center
Ernest it involved as a Mason
Club nK-mhcr and a charter member
o f the Lions club
Both take an active part as Friends
of the Irrigon Library and members
o f Columbia View Community
Churh The Jorgensens also played
a part in the Irrigon Neighborhood
W atch program
The Jorgensens, originally from
Canada, became naturalized citizens
o f the United Slates in a ceremony
al Pendleton in 19f>2 After moving
from Canada, the family lived in
Johannesburg. South Africa; then
moved to Santa Rosa. California,
finally, settling in Irrigon in I960
Ernest, with the help o f his sons,
D m and Bud. eventually started the
Jorgensen Trucking Company He
retired in 1981
Die Jorgensen's son. Bud. is a
journalist in Toronto, Canada Don.

general lines insurance agent for
Simmons and Fischer. Hermiston
Ernest ami Margaret have five
grandchildren
