So what 's the flap over the prospect
that we may have a presidential can
didalc who is not certified sane hy a
competent psychiatrist ’ How could he
he. he's never even seen one?
What would we think about a
presidential candidate who had never

been to a dentist'1 Would the President
then refuse to pick on a “ snaggle
tooth?" How ahnut a candidate who had never consulted an auto mechanic *
Would we refer to him as “ old broken down?”
Suppose the mass media reported our guy hail never been to a barber
We'd dismiss hint immediately as a “ shaggy mane " And if he'd never
sought help on his income tas return, we’d debate whether he was a cheater
or a chump
The fact is. all of us consult a whole variety of professionals and semi
professionals for a variety of reasons Mostly to gam advise, sometimes
to obtain a service. To do so. is not only acceptable, but considered prudent
Recent events, however, have cast doubt on the prudence of obtaining
advise Nancy Reagan has recently taken it on the chin for consulting an
astrologer ami Michael Dukakis has been smeared with the possibility that
he consulted a psychiatrist
We think the mass media spends so much tunc reporting the income
quential things because they neither know nor understand the important
things We won't read a great deal about what cither Dukakis or Hush
will do if elected president That would take some effort
We will read a great deal about whether they've seen a psychiatrist or
not. how they perspire on the campaign trail and what kind of cute little
boys tliey were according to some 100 year old former nest iloor neighbor

February 16, 1912, daughter of
Diuts E. Bisbcc and Fmclinc Bishcc
She lived in Heppncr for seven
months.
Kay was a registered nurse and a
school teacher She taught school at
Toledo, Newport, W aldport,
Parkdalc and Oregon City
She had one bn>ther Orrcn Bishcc
(deceased). Her mother and father
prccecded her in death
She was a very strong conserva
tionist and was a life long mcmehcr
in “ Nature Conservancy ”, Ma/ama
Audubon
and
Northwest
Sterlhcaders She was also r
memher of Oregon Education
Association and president of this
organization at Lincoln County
She was a member of the
Presbyterian Church in Coos Bay
Surs ivors include several cousins
of the Bisbee, Gilliam and Wright
families.

Mrs Rietmann. 54. a resident of
lone since 1955. died Sunday. Aug
7. I9H8 at Pioneer Memorial
Hospital in Hcppner
She was born Sept 26. 1934 at
Portland, daughter of Roy and
Margaret Krebs Hurst She was mis
cd at Cecil and attended school at
Arlington
On Sept 18. 1955. she married
Bill J Rietmann at Arlington
She was an active member of the
lone United Church of Christ, serv
ing as choir director, pianist and
church treasurer She also served as
lone city treasurer for a number of
years and was involved in numerous
community and school projects
Survivors include her husband at
the home, sons. Mark E. of Hcpp
ncr. Brian P and Gregg A both of
lone, mother Margaret Hurst of
Arlngton, sister Shirley Gill of Arl
ington, four grandchildren

Bill moved with his family to Lone
Roc k when he was 2 years old He
was a stock rancher at Lone rock for
several years He moved to Her-
mivton in 1953 and fanned in the
Westland district at Hermiston with
his son Tom for 23 years He was
a member of the Masonic laidge at
Condon, the United Methodist
Church at Hermiston, and a former
member of the Westland Irrigation
district hoard of directors He was
a former school board member at
Lone Rock and he served as Grand
marshall of the Umatilla County Fair
Parade several years ago
Bill is survived by his wife. Callie
of Hermiston. one son Tom Hud
dleston, Hcppner; one daughter
Billie Jean Waud of Hphrata. Wa.;
two sisters. Sadie Parrish Lake
Oswego. Mcanor DeBok Pilot Rock,
twelve grandchildren and twelve
great grandhctldren
Funeral services will he Friday.

Water Resource Commission
To the Editor
I would like to take this opportune
ty to thank Bill Cramer of bums for
his service on the Water Resource
Commission
Water is a very important issue for
Fastem Oregon, and Mr Cramer
conducted himself in a manner that
we can all be proud of.
I am on the Water Policy Commit
tee. and therefore. I receive all of the
minutes from the Water Resource
Com m ission's meetings. Bill
Cramer's water philosophy and
knowledge cast him in a minority
position on the Commission Despite
this, he handled that position with
courage and did make a difference
for water users in Fastem Oregon
It is important dut we in Eastern
Oregon continue to have this kind of
representation on the Water
Resource Commission For this
reason. I called a meeting with
Governor Goldschmidt to discuss
and ensure such an appointment to
fill the vacancy I am pleased that
Cliff Bentz of Ontario has been ap
pointed to this scat on the Commis
sion I strongly heliesc that he will
represent us well, and will he a scry
capable and enthusiastic voice for
Eastern Oregon
We need more people like Hill
Cramer and Cliff Bentz who are
willing to serve on important state
comm issions.

Forest service tour is timely
To the Editor
The Forest Service is conducting
a lour of Forest Management prac
tices. emphasizing recreation,
tourism and watershed, this Satur
day. August 13. beginning at 9 a m
at the Hcppner Forest Service
Office
This meeting is a timely and vital
opportunity for the owners of the
forest, the public, to exercise their
legal rights to help develop stewerd-
shtp and policy for the management
of our National Forests Congres
sional law requires public input and
evidence that the public responses
have been considered and im
plemented when possible
The Umatilla National Forest pro
vides timber for our local wood pro
ducts industry , our tourist, rccrca-
tion/hunting industry, our vital
watershed, our wildlife and aquatic
life and range for our cattle industry
A fair, just and equitable manage
ment policy would insure vital
timber resources for all of our local
industries in perpetuity Our forest
laws and statutes require that all
forest resources are maintained and
conserved for all generation
I urge our community to support
our Forest Service as they endeavor
to develop and impliment our
equitable forest management policy
This is a golden opportunity for our
timber industry, elected officials, the
Forest Service and the public to
work together

Aquifers and subterranean rivers not
understood
To the Editor
When a high level Forest Service
employee says that "the best thing
you can do for a watershed is to cut
it all down and pave it." he obvatus-
ly docs not know about aquifers and
subterranean rivers He does not
understand the complex filtration
system a forest plays in slowing
down run-off and presenting erosion
of our precious topsoil. He simply
docs not see that Heppncr. Lex
ington and lone and thousands of
other towns across America draw
their water from underground If all
(he water runs down Willow and
Rhea Creeks into the Columbia
Riser in the middle of Spring, how
can we draw it out of the ground in
August and September ’ How can we
even draw it out of the creek if all
Or maybe he wants to justify an
allowable cut that is way too high for
a semi and (almost desert) region
We are very lucky to have a forest
in Morrow County I cannot afford
to travel to the Cascades or to the
Wallowas to recreate Can you? I
think wc had better fight to protect
