Winner named in Irrigon Icemeit contest

Keith Barton. Irrigon. took first
place in Imgon'v Chamber of Com­
merce Ice Melt Contest held at
Brim n s Truck and Auto
Barton's guessing time ssas 108

second with a guessing lime of 106
hours 20 minutes and 6 seconds
The actual time it tix>k the 8.000
pound, red. blue and green ice cube
to melt was 107 hours 13 minutes
and 4 1 seconds
The meltdown time teas detemun
ed with a magnifying glass, held by
Jim Nettleland. sice president of the
Im gon Chamber, and a stop watch
held by Rav Hill, president elect
The funds raised by the Chamber
promotion was $700 The monies
will be used by the newly formed
chamber for expenses jnd also for
projects such as placing restrooms in
the Irngon City Park
First pri/c, donated by Tales and
Tackle Gunsmithing and Mike
Weinkaut Guide Service, was a pro­
fessionally guided fishing trip fur
four on the Columbia Riser, second

Irrigon church has new pastor

The new pastor of Columbia View
Community Church in Im gon is a
man of many talents
le e McCarthy 43. has been a win­
ning hxXhall. haskcthall and baseball
coach, taught a variety of subjects,
hut "m ortly social studies and
sports” ; has been a youth director
and an interim pastor, and runs his
own construction business He now
feels the calling to go into full-time
service for God
“ God has given me my gifts," he
said " I'm not special, He is
spec ial ”
A lthough he is ’part-tim e*
preacher teacher at Columbia View
Community Church, he is spending
40 to 50 hours a week studying,
visiting, teaching and preaching His
efforts are pay mg oft Thecongrrga

The energetic pastor u ready and
willing to drop everything for hit
new flock. " I'm my own boss, so
I can leave at anytime for emergen
cies," he said
McCarthy sees unlimited potential
for the ten year old church, "and the
community." he added

classes for all ages on Sunday mor­
ning is high on his list of priorities
for the future.
He attended Portland State
University where he received his
Bachelors degree in education "My
wife, Joyce, put me through

today, I owe to her "
After college. McCarthy became
teacher, athletic director, and
hasehall, football and basketball
coach at Saint Joseph's Catholic
School in Kennewick. "Those were
the most beneficial years of my life,
he said
"T he kids took nine consecutive
league championships in football,
basketball and baseball " said
McCarthy. modestly
The students moved from the hot
tom of their league to the top under
his coaching methods, winning
seventy-five percent of the games
they played
He coached girls basketball and
volley ball at Kamiakin High in Ken
newick fin three years He then sers
ed as head haskthall coach lor the
women's team at Columbia Basin
Community College for three years
He has been an active lay person
in various church actix Hies since he
was a teen ager, but he didn’t feel
the tug to become a full-time
minister for God until he became an
interment minister in IV86 at Colum
bia Community Church in Richland
Being an acid reader. McCarthy
has a Christian library consisting of
1200 titles " I have gained my
seminary education on my ow n." he
said
In the meantime, he is also busy
running his own construction com­
pany. building houses and small
commercial buildings He and his
crew of three or more, depending on
the job, also do remodeling
McCarthy and his wife, Joyce,
have two children Their son. David
22, lives in the Tn Cities, ami their
daughter. Ix-Ann IV. lives at home
when she's not attending Warren
Pacific College in Portland
He and his family arc actively
Uxiking for a house in the Irrigon
area and hope to he nxived by the
first of September
Sunday morning Sunday School at
Columbia View Community Church

held at 11 a m on June 25 at the Christian l ife Center I imla Bond, mother

The bride is the daughter of Don and Linda Bond of Heppner The

The hridcs attendants were Tracey Bond, the brides sister as maid of
honor and friend of the bride Jeannic Lit/simmons was bridesmaid They
were attired in blue full length taffeta dresses, accented hy bows at the
shoulders and in the hack
Phil Lstbcrg was best man for the groom Ushers were Kevin Bond,
the bride’s brother and Greg Joncv. brother of the gnxim
A reception was held at the Christian Life Center after the ceremony

bride is employed at Pioneer Memorial Hospital as a Certified Nurses Aide
