common in yard and garden plants,
and an understanding of nutrient
deficiency symptoms is essential to
correctly identifying the problem
In our area, the nutrients most
commonly lacking arc nitrogen,
sulfur, and in n Others can certainly
he in short supply, but these are the
most common
Nitrogen deficiency shows up as
pale green older ¡caves. Nitrogen is
moved by the plant from the older
parts to the new leaves when it
becomes short The older leaves turn
yellow, and then brown as they die
Adequate nitrogen is essential for
normal flowering and fruit setting of
all species A deficiency will result
in reduced fruit size and quantity
Sulfur deficiency symptoms are
similar to nitrogen except that they
appear on new growth instead of on
old With sulfur deficiency expect to
sec yellow leaves, stunted plants,
and reduced leaf size
Sulfur is tied to nitrogen in that if
one is plentiful, it can cause the other
to be short In other words, if you
arc seeing sulfur deficiency. it could
mean that you overfertilized with
nitrogen earlier
Iron deficiency appears as a
yellowing or bleaching of the leaf
area between the veins (intcrveinal
chlorosis) The veins retain their
dark green color, but the rest of the
leaf turns yellow This affects the
newer, younger leaves, but as the
deficiency becomes more severe,

Iron deficiency is a function of soil
acidity more than of an amount of
iron in the soil. As soil pH becomes
higher, the availably of the iron is
reduced, causing a deficiency Since
spreading fireplace ashes on the
garden area can rar* pH. this is a
frequent cause of in»n deficiency
The solution to these problems is
simple Add some appropriate fer
tilr/er Both nitrogen and sulfur are
soluble and are available in several
forms Any of them will work
Fertilizer packages show their
contents using a standard formula
The package will have three
numbers displayed which tell as a
percent the amount of nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium contain
ed in it. A package which states
10-20-10, for example, will contain
10% nitrogen. 20% phosphorus (as
P205), and 10% potassium (as K20)
If sulfur is also a component of
that fertilizer, it will be added on
after the other three nutrients A
package which states 20-0-0-5 con
tains 20% nitrogen, no phosphorus
or potassium, and 5% sulfur
Iron needs to be added in a
specially prepared ' chelated'’ form
Chelated iron becomes available to
the plants, while other forms are not
T he amount needed vanes depending
on the plant affected I cn pounds per
acre may be adequate for shallow
vegetable crops, but MX) pounds per
acre are required for fruit trees

The spiritual change following a true conversion should ultimately be so
revolutionary that the New Testament rightly describes it as a new birth
Indeed. Jesus made it painfully clear to the religious leader Nicodemus,
that until someone is 'horn again' he can neither see nor enter the kingdom
of God “ You must he horn again'*, said Jesus. (John 3:3-8)
But how can I know that I am horn again ’ If I rest on my feelings as
a Christian. I am in for a rough time Feelings are notoriously deceptive,
they are a hoprles barometer for spiritual reality, and depend on such mun
dane matters as food and sleep and physical condition Therefore, how can
I know that I am horn again1
John tackles this question in his first letter which was written to Chris
tians to assure them of their relationship with God The letter is peppered
with the words "We know" and it was written expressly "That you may
know that you have eternal life’*. (I John 5:13)
Think for a moment of sitting on a three legged stool If all three legs
are correctly in place your position is quite stable If one leg is short or
even missing altogether you will wohhie If two legs are absent you will

Tips For Safer lawn Mowing
When operated carelessly, a lawn
mower can be a very dangerous
machine Both small lawn mowers
and the larger four wheel tractor
mowers must be handled carefully or
injuries to the operator or by slanders
may result
Use the following checklist for
safe lawn mower operation For the

•Inspect for loose nuts and holts, and
make sure all fuel line fittings are
tight
—Check the mower blade for
dullness, nicks and imbalance
■ Service the mower regualrly in ac
cordance with instructions in the
owner's manual If a problem arises
take the mower to an authorized ser
