MCHS bus trip termed huge success
By Delpha lories
Fnday morning at 6:30 a m
found the bus starting on a three day
tnp to the Spokane area with 30
Morrow County citizens aboard
The first stop was a rest area near
Spokane where the group enjoyed
walking around a hit and pastcrics
served with drinks The group was
soon settled in the Sheraton-
downtown hotel, and ready for a fun
filled ample of days On Fnday they
visited the Musuem of Native
American Cultures, exhibits
celebrating the legend of the ages,
collections of gold and silver work,
and North American Indian arts and
crafts The group visited the Flour
Mill which is the flour mill where
there were several shops and an old
fashioned Ice cream Parlor where
mo« of the group treated themselves
to fine ice cream That evening
following dinner the gmup divided
and vome attended the horse races
and some a movie Saturday mom
mg the gmup enjoyed a trip to Coeur
d' Alene l„»kc and on to Cataldo.
Idaho where they visited the oldest
standing building in Idaho, the Old
Mission This church was started in
1850 and was finished for use three
years later Timbers in the church
range from 18 to 36 inches square
with the largest weighing approx
mutely 6 tons The outside of the
building has been modernized with
siding to preserve the building while
the inside is the orginal There is a
Beck worth organ which is over l(X)
years old in the building Not all the
windows are modem glass, vome
date hack to the 1800's. The statues
on each side of the altar are wooden
statues, carved from solid blocks of
wood by Father Ravalli Much of the
work in and around the building was
by Father Ravalli. He carved the
onginal altar out of wood and
painted it to resemble marble There
are hits of the original wall paper,
which dates to the I850's There is
a 15 minute movie at the registration
building as well as souvemers Near
by are the silver mines, and much of
the jewelry is made from silver min
ed here with the silver nuggets On
returning to Spokane, the gmup
visited Mamtow Park, where they
spent some tinw in the Japanese
Gardens, and in an observatory with
many beautiful plants, and walked
amund the gardens That evening the
gmup enjoyed a dinner together and
prepared for the trip home Sunday
morning found some of the groups
early risers attending church services
and others relaxing and waiting for
the Riverfront Park to open Some
rode the Skyndc, others a small
tram, and others saw a movie and
some enjoyed dinner before starting
home The weatherman had really
cooperated with this gmup with
beautiful sunshine and no wind A
short stop in Hcmuston where Carl
Smouse returned to his work, and a
coffee break was enjoyed by some,
then on home where each mother
received a rose The trip is spon
sored the first weekend in May by
the Morrow County Hirtortcal
Society Each year others join us and
some of the steady travelers are
greatly missed when unable to join
the gmup
Birthdays recognized were Carl
