My first disappointment was the " Private Road” sign I bad to pass just
to get there Boeing closed a portion o f that n>ad recently and I wondered
if that could happen to the airport section Then I found y«xi can't get within
a hall mile o f the airport without going through a locked gate The sign
.those the combination lock said "L o c k U N IC O M ” which is meaningless
to all hut pilots and they come in from the other side
The same UNICOM combination works (although I had to guess it
would, there's mi sign) on the double wide just o ff the apron where I found
one o f two restrooms working. Ihc power on and a telephone, all in
desperate need of houscclcaning The phone works too As a test, I called
P o rtla n d , direct dial, on the Port's nickel Could have called Australia and
talked an hour
( here were no airplanes, no hangers, mi fuel, mi caretaker
As I see it. the Pori was animus to acquire the airport to add to their
paper portfolio, hul is otherwise too occupied to nuke much o f it It was
finally licensed laic last year, hut still isn't included on the latest charts
Ihc Port's lack of development nearly resulted in the loss o f their lease
last summer
By steadfastly clinging to the "tra n sp o rt" designation, (that's a kind
ol super international category) the Port is effectively stifling descl»»pment
lo r example, the 700 foot set hack makes hanger con «ruction cost
prohibitive
Immediate needs are A substantial barrier to prevent auto traffic on the
landing strip, an interim plan to allow hanger construction in reasonable
proximity to the strip, and a water, sewer ami power equipped pad. rent
free, in exchange for wine degree o f security

It seems that if you want to abuse
a law to benefit your business or
yourself, find a friend in the D A's
office and you might get away with

For the past several weeks Mr.
Glenn's articles have taken the
readers of the Heppner Gazette on
several trips throughout the nor
thwest and have been most infor
ming But I w ould like to take you
readers on a little trip, that w ill cost
only a few dollars for gas and you
can pac k a lunch or go w ith me on
a beautiful, histone al trio mrht here
in your ow n back yard
W e start our trip from tfeppoer,
South up W illo w ( reek road about
1 mile, we find W illo w Creek
Lake, (fishing, boating, swimming,
waterskiung, etc ). But if it is hot
and you want, continue on up the
W illo w Creek valley about 20
miles and we find Cutsforth Park

facilities, ptentemg, bird waft hing.
etc.). Day use is free, or you can
camp overnight for a very low fee,
but the trip can really take on many
options from here There are many
trails (they need improved, but
they were made back in the
1930's), there are old coal mines
to tour w ith a unique history I like
to walk through the area and see
th e o kf iMrc arts and the old broken
dow n cookshack, the old cook
stove abandoned 8() some years
ago I let my m ind drift bar k to im
agine the men working w ith a
dream that unfortunately turned
bankruptcy instead of riches This
trail, if you like to hike, w ill take
you on up Coalmine H ill to the top
of tfse highway.
In the same area there are many
fossils in the sand rocks and right
on the highway (only 1 V5 miles
above the park we find the CCC
waterfall w hich was b u ilt by the
CCC boys tiK k in tf>e early 19JOY
Men w ith teams of horses owned
by Earl's father built the Smith-
D itch Diversion w hich diverts
thousands o f gallons o f water into
W illo w Creek for irrigation. This
was
a
w o n d e rfu l
project, for it gave many proud
men |obs during the depression
days Right beside th«* waterfall in
the road t uthank you can find
many leaf fossils of tropical trees
that can n u ke my mind wonder

Then my tour takes us up to Her

From Gibson's Cave there are
tw o old trails, one takes you down
the north side o f Little Bald M oun
tain, the other up to the top of Lit
tle Bald M ountain where you can
see for hundreds of miles The
view is breathtaking You can v e
many mountains-Mt Hood M t
Adams, Mt Raineer most pro
minently. There in a tree is an old
mail box w ith a register to sign and
it's fun to read w ho has been up
to tfx* top through the years. There
are several trails from here One
go«*s to the top of tfx* Next M oun
tain. Big Bald, where tfx* v e w is
even more beautiful The old horse
trail in the saddle lx*tween the two
mountains to the north, brings you
back to Cutsforth Park, or to the
south brings you to Kelly Prairie
O r my favorite trail is to leave tfx*
mail box and go west about 300
yards and drop dow n the north
trail to lake-The-Snake's-Cave and
the old earthquake faults Here we
find huge bould«*rs (rushed around
by earthquakes many hundreds of
years ago. These are fun to explore
around There are hear caves, in
among the rocks too. In this

que w ild orchids, m ushrtxxm and
just prec tous (x*ace and quiet The
serenity might be interrupted only
by a noisy piliated woodpecker,
who's mad bee ause you are in his
territory, or you may hear a great
c rash as a herd of Elk flee from you.
Then the* trail continues back down
to Cutsforth Park Right near the
end, only a lxxit V> m ile above the
parks, is tfx- O ld Yocom G old Dig
ging, The C hina W a ll, Earth
uj>fxMvals and other unusual rock
formations
There are many other trails that
offer many hours of hiking too that
can lx* explored I wish I could say
that you w ill find these trails easy
to follow , but they are not Tfx*y
need remarked and I feel that in
tfx* near future we w ill sex* this
dream come true so you can
fo llo w them as easily as I do, and
v> you too can enjoy this beautiful
trip.
Many, many, wonderful days
can Lx* spent exploring this area,
and can offer you and your fam ily
unique experiences and hours of
enjoyment. And most important is
that it is right here in your own area
and only cost a little gas and a pic
