Road Budget, it appears that we w ill
not sum have a Public Works Dtrec
tor We have wasted tunc and money

Ixascnworlh. Washington closed and
that m ill town was on the verge o f dry
mg up and blow ing away Some o f the
city lathers cixikcd up a plan to rebuild
in a Bavarian theme and today Leaven

worth attracts tourists from all over the
world
We visited on a sunny June week day a couple o f years ago and the place
was hus> indeed The exterior architecture did look Bavarian hut the in
tenor o f most businesses was pure tourist trap There w as a mars clous
outdoor display o f fine art ranging from carved wtxxl to devil worship
acrylics, all beyond our budget
The real treat was the non-Basanan. northwest kiggmg rail mail engine
ahoose and coach set up as an ice cream stand The best jiart was the
friendly and cheerful proprietor who carried on a good natured visit while
he dipped ice cream as fast as the long line could march by
Summer looked like one long festival in Ixavcnworth and I'm told that
it's most fashionable to stay in Ixavcnworlh during a winter skiing vaca
UtKi although winter week days sometimes take on a gh«*M town character
The theme is imposed hy force o f law The cost ol building facades is
bom by the jimperty owners The substantial publx park, parking and «»ther
public areas are maintained with taxes
While there is now substantial support for the concept, it wasn't always
so since success has taken many years to achieve
There are many other examples o f man nude tourist attractions.
Disneyland, the Statue o f Liberty and the Pyramids come to mind
