community
According to a study by Oregon
State University. Morrow County
has more acres of wine grapes than
any other county in the stale and only
one tiny »incry to process them. " I
crushed about 5 tons of grapes last
year." s,ud Ed Glenn, winemaker at

W hile the M o rro w County
vineyards are young and |ust com
ing into fu ll production , the
Chamber's Committee believes now
is the time to start promoting the area
tor lixation o f a major winery
"We're calling for proposals to
prepare a preliminary feasibility
study," said John Grace, committee
chairman and manager o f Inland
Empire Bank "Potential winery
developers should know the details
o f our great supply «>1 grapes, the
availability of winery sites and the
tourist potential.“ he added
Boardman is located on the
Oregon side o f the Columbia River,
lust across from the Columbia Crest
winery, (formerly Stc Michelle),
the largest winery in the Pacific
Northwest
The U S Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms (BATE) has
recognized the Columbia Valley on
both the Oregon and Washington
sides as a unique v iticultural area
Most Washington Stale vineyards
are in the Columbia Valley and the
Morrow County vineyards have the
same favorable soil and climatic
conditions
Once completed, the preliminary
feasibility study w ill be widely cir
culated in the hopes o f envouraging
a winery developer to build near
Boardman
" fhcre soon » ill be enough
»inegrapes here to supply four
wineries, each o f which could he
larger than any winery in the stale,"
