Chimney fires start for many
reasons Creosote can build up in
vide and is fianunablc Old or crack
ed masonry chimneys can leak heat
to rafters These rafters have kindl
ing temperature which lowers as
they age Too many units using the
same chimney is unsafe Finally,
Jraft problems can arise due to im
proper chimney heights
If a chimney fire starts, shut off
the oxygen to the chimney and call
the fire department (911).
Cutting off the oxygen only works
if you have an airtight stove, if no
other device uses the same chimney,
if unused inlets arc properly sealed,
and if your chimney t* sourx! and
airtight
('lean the chimney regularly,
about every three cords of wixxl is
normal, but at least annually
Smoke detectors These nxxlern
devices are able to detect a bouse tire
while it is still in the smouldering
stage They have an impressive track
record for saving lives Use them
and check them regularly
Fire extinguishers Be prepared to
stop small fires, because large fires
start small
