As I move away from Morrow County, like I ’ ve been planning. I know
that I w ill always carry memories o f my life here After all. what are we
but the sum o f our experiences -living here for nearly 22 years has inc reas
ed my total considerably
When I came here my three children were maturing, my sons were through
college and their sister was beginning her colllcge years My new stepson
was away in the navy and his eighth grade sister. Karla, and the young
people I met in classes at Heppner High and then in the junior high seemed
rather different from the youths I knew best and this community differed
from the university town where 1 had lived very close to the campus
After I became acquainted with more adults here, I felt my values alter
ing and began feeling (hat the academic life was somewhat a false jungle
o f political sc rambling w here some people w ere ntrt nearly as real as many
o f the good folks I liked here cast o f the Cascades
My husband B ill Weatherford really believed that north central Oregon
was God’s country and its people the greatest on earth. B ill never cared
to live elsewhere or even to travel very far from this area which so satisfied
him until he died just before Christmas 1977 Although I greatly enjoy see
mg far places. I ’ ve been happy to come back here until recently when I
became weary o f trying to maintain a too large for one N>usc, yard and
garden and yearned to be closer to family members, especially a dandy crop
o f growing grandchildren.
The talented, affectionate people I ’ ve enjoyed knowing through par
ticipating in Soroptimist International, the Chamber of Commerce, the
Garden Club, the Morrow County Historical Society, the Bookworms and
the lodge and dear church o f my choice have been delightful Because I
have striven to learn background facts aN>ut this county, I have come to
feel sincere pride in its institutions and its established programs from St
Patrick’s Weekend through Memorial Weekend, summer's fine County Fair,
each fall's annual dinners and the December Artilactory and the Greens
workshop Fveryonc here is working to see the counts thrive and continue
to provide the necessities for good living
Being over the hill but not yet under it. I find that leaving behind daily
contacts with cordial groups and business persons, who have been kind and
helpful, is difficult Probably my last employment has been here with the
county sc N mi I district, the Heppner Public Library, the family-owned laun
drnmat and part time with this newspaper all good learning experiences
for me.
My compliments to the City o f Heppner for its Volume I. Number I,
newsletter How I would like to see more issues I shall continue to subscribe
to the G T to help keep tabs on friends and activities here
Hopefully Morrow folks w ill look me up when they pause in Yakima
I w ill answer all letters addressed to me at Sun Tower, Apt 1005; 6 North
Sixth St.; Yakima, W'A 9H90I I 'll not have a phone for several weeks
I leave you with two stanzas I truly admire from the w riting of Edgar
A Guest, whose best known line is ” It takes a heap o ’ living to make a
house a home ”
A man is at his finest towards the finish of the year. He is almost what
he should he when the Christmas season's here. Then he’ s thinking more
o f others than he's thought the months before. And the laughter o f his
children is a joy worth toiling for He is less a selfish creature than at any
other time. When the Christmas spirit rules him he comes close to the
subline
Man is ever in a struggle and he's oft misunderstood, There are days
the worst that's jn him is the master o f the good. But at Christmas, kind
ness rules him and he puts himself aside. And his petty hates are vanquish
ed and his heart is opened wide Oh. I don’t know how to say it. hut
someNiw n seems to me That at Christmas man is almost what God sent
him here to be
And so giaxlhye and best wishes for a joyful Christmas and a really great
