W ith w alcrtow l season in fu ll swing I have been
getting ihe urge to grab the shotgun and my hun
ling dogs ( iiu ik ly and Sam, and head for the
Columbia
ll s been a souplc o f years since I have hunted
d u c k s and geese The last several years the bag
lim its on waterfowl have been so contusing that you
about have to have a game biologist and y ik ir at
torney w ith yuu in your duck blind Really i t ’ s not
ifi.il had. hut you do have to know your ducks pret
ly w ell, or else the game warden w ill he the one
to get the last quack
I remember when I first started to hunt duck», I would hunt the m ar
shes between Hal K ik k and Me Nary Dam. The first coupfc years I would
lum p, shoot or craw l up on feeding ducks o r geese to get a good shot
Definitely easier said than done W hile craw lin g through mucky cow
pastures I would observe hunters in blinds, calling the ducks into their
decoys I ilex ided that was the way to do it So I bought a dozen decoys
and built m yself a blind I gol up bright and early the nest m orning,
and went out and set the decoys Toker a German Shepherd and Grundy
my I ah shorthair and my -ell g»8 as cozy as possible in our Mind I nctfiucd
about MH> yards to the west a a m p le hunters were vetting their decoys
out also II wasn't long (hereafter that I noticed a small flock o f M allards
had taken notice o f my decoys and began c irc lin g just out o f shotgun
range
M y tw o d o g s had also noticed the ducks and were com ing down w ith
a had case o f duck lever I mean they were shaking in their paws and
w ouldn't take their eyes o ff those ducks fo r a second They probably
circled 5 limes, when (he hunters in the other blind started calling w ith
a duck call Ih e ducks went straight to them Old Tocker was stretching
h o neck to keep his eye on ihem. when the ducks flew over their M ind
they dropped a drake from the f lik k N ow Toker who was trained in
retrieving, and having duck lever, took out o f the M ind like a holt o f
lightning Before the hunters could get to their duck, Toker was h alf
way hack to my blind w ith a flat M allard duck, and had tw o hunters
totally c o n tu s e d at what hail |ust happened W ith much cmharassment.
I took their duck hack to them A fte r 1 explained what had happened,
the hunters chuckled and remarked that I prohably never go home empty-
handed w ith that dog in my blind
This week s tip o f the Sportsman's Cap goes to Louis Carlson fo r pm-
