Wahtonka hands Mustangs second loss of season

The \k ahionkk j Eagle* handed the
Heppner Mustangs their second
league loss in two weeks as the
Mustangs slim their chances for a
playoff spot
"Even though we lost the game.
I was proud of the way the team
played As a unit, we played one of
the best games we played all year,”
said head coach Tim Birkby
Detensisely, the Mustangs held
Wahtonka 100 yards short of their
offensive average while Heppner ob
tained their offensive average of over
240 yards a game
In the first half, it was a scoreless
game as the two teams see sawed
their offensive and defensive attacks
In the third quarter, the Mustangs
Came out after receiving the hall and
rushed hO yards on 10 plays scoring
the first touchdown of the game with
Russell Bntt scoring on a 3 yard run
Wahtonka then scored later in the
third with running hack Dan Drury
scoring on a one sard run. then run
ning in the two point conversion
Late in the founh quarter, the
Mustangs scored on a 18 yard sinke
from Dick Dev in to Tim Hays, who
came in to replace starting receiver
Duane Ball who had received a leg
injury
W ahtonka answered hack on the
kick-off as Drury ran the hall hack
83 yards with place kicker Tim
Grant kicking the conversion putting
the Eagles up 15-14
"I feel there were some ques
tionable calls by the officials at
critical times, but I was still very
pleased by the way the team never
gave up and tned to the end to gain
a quick touchdown The loss of
Duane Ball will he a hard one to
overcome." said Birkby
"The Heppner audience had just
about as many spectators or more
than Wahtonka." Birkby added
Heppner plays next Friday night
at 7 30 p m as they travel to play
the Wasco County Bedsides who arc
0-7 in league play this year

on attacks across the net at practice

ed 26 attacks, successfully turning
14 of those into kills for 34% ace

matches when we needed them We
had relied heav ily on our strong ser
ving This match showed the girls
they could set the ball up and hit,"
said J V coach Susie Hisler
Sophomores Kim Stookcy and
Dulcie Palmer turned in all around
performances Stookey once again
showed quickness saving balls and
keeping balls going into the op
ponents court, along with aggrevsivc
play at the net going 4 4 on attac ks
with 100% being kills Palmer's 9 9
serving in game one. finished strong
again in the serving department

good sets at the net. too. due to good

Hays, a second string receiver
caught three passes for 66 yards in
eluding a touchdown reception that
pul the Mustangs ahead with two
minutes left in the game after replac
ing injured receiver Duane Ball
"Although Tim has not played
much varsity, he stepped in and did
a good job when needed," said
coach Tim Birkby
Defensive player of the week was
Gene laincastcr who finished the
Wahtonka game with 19 defensive
points, dropping the hall carrier
twice for a loss, and a fumble
recovery which resulted in Hcpp
ner's second touchdown
"Gene has been a major force all
year as a defensive tackle He has
drawn double team and sometimes
triple-team blocking from opposing
teams." Birkby noted

the serve Jenny went in and put two
serves over the net and during the
rally passed two super bumps up to
Dulcie. enabling us two kills for
points 14 and 13 to cap the game and
match
Sometimes the girls get down
when they don't enter a game at the
beginning, but whether it's point l
or 14 and 15, each point is impor
tant All the girls played and con
tributed to the win
As of press time Wednesday, the
J.V .’s will have completed their
|987 volleyball season last Tuesday
night in a home match with Stan
field Results will appear next week

The lone volleyball team (raveled
to Arlington Tucvday, Oct 20. to
take on the defending State Champs
The Varsity team played very
good volleyball despite losing both
games.
Jumor Angie Rudisill led the Car
dinals in the serving department
scoring 4 out o f the Cardinals 7
points
Unfortunately, the Cards dropped
the games 15-7, 15-10
The Cardinals played better in the
second game, however, nuking the
score closer and giving Arlington a
run for its money.
Jo Cupps played very solidly in
the game with nine good receives
