Voters have jusl received a mall
in ballot for the initiative petition on
the Tidewater proposed landfill that
would receive solid waste from out
side the count) I feel it is important
that the voters understand what a
’ ‘ yes'* vote on this measure means
to us in the Meppner and Islin g ton
area With the probable closure of
the Heppner landfill, the proposed
regional landfill site is of more im
portance to us than simply adding
more jobs and dollars to our county
(although these things are sorely
needed)
The Metropolitan Service District
that would also be using the
Tidewater landfill, must have a land
fill in place by early 1989 Because
it will take several months to get the
site reaily, Metro must award a con
tract by the spring of I9HK Saying
“ yes" to the initiative petition would
mean that we could not vote on any
landfill siting until the next general

After her presentation to the Economic Development committee o f the

industry lamb-Weston has recently laid-off. permanently, more than
250 employees at their french fry plant in Boardman Many o f those
jobs were full time production people with wages more than double the
minimum wage More recently. PGE has announced a reduction o f 20
employees in the S25 thousand plus salary range Most o f those people,
aside from their economic impact, w ill leave voids in church, c i v i c and

By Claudia Hug has Chamber Manager
For what it's worth, you have one
of the few Chamber Managers in the
State o f Oregon who can tell the d if
ference between a cow chip and a
road apple This discovery was made
at the recent Oregon Chamber Ex
ecutive Conference during a profes
sional scavenger hunt, an exercise to
8 « to know each other before the
serious business started What can 1
say! I've found that when you trail
cattle on your "day o f f , you can’t
help but make observations along the
trail I guess the significance is that
you have a Chamber Manager who
cares equally about town and coun
try! It's also a good time to sort out
ideas and plans for actum as long as
you don't forget your purpose for
being there
