Button business just one interest for
local woman
Judie Laughlin, longtime Heppner
resident, started working at Heppner
T V as a girl in high school At that
time her father. Carl Spaulding, one
of five local people who started the
cable company, was the office
manager She has been working for
them as secretary treasurer, office
manager for 21 of the 33 years
Heppner T V has been in existence
Judie enjoys several hobbies,
some of which arc snowmobiling.

needlework, much of which she has
received blue ribbons on. A new
hobby she Staned recently is making
buttons About a year ago. Judie saw
an ad tor making and selling buttons
She was interested so she ordered the
equipment and found herself in

logos, including originals Judie has
designed for special occasions, such
as St. Patrick** Day New buttons
will be made again this year for St
Patrick's Day, causing them to
become collector's items

The 1988 Princess Try out Contest
was held on Saturday. October 24.
at the Heppner fairgrounds This
year there were five young women
who tried out, Sliawna Cash,
daughter of Roger and Kathy Cash.

"The contest was very difficult to
judge Several of the candidates did
well in the two different categories
that they were fudged on," explain
ed Mickey Madison, Court Director
"We have an eligibility requirement
that the girls be 16 years old by
August I The competition is not
meant to discourage anyone from
try mg out and we look forward to
having some of these girls hack next
year," says Mickey, "they already
will know what to expect "
After competing in the horseman
ship contest, a speaking contest, and
an interview with the Rodeo Com
mittee, Nancy Bailey and Kristi
O'Brien were chosen as Princesses
for 1988 They will join (Juccn
Missy Schoonover, Lexington. to
Monday night
Apparently each of the two city
patrolmen were also overpaid, but
the council said the patrolmen would
not have to return the pay, since the
two had been informed by the police
chict that the money had been
earned.
Ruthbun's overpayment may be
paid back monthly or traded for
vacation time, the council said
Contacted Tuesday, Chief
Rathbun said he had "no comment
at this time.”
