By Qrag Barron. Manager
G lue hoards arc ulvo effective for
rodents but must he used wisely A
trick to aid in success is to place
these glue boards out in their original
"s a n d w ic h " form After the rixlents
become accustomed to stepping on
the rectangular shaped boards in
their runways, the hoards can he
separated < iluc boards should never
be used in areas where children or
jH*ts can accidentally come in con
tact with them
Tracking jxiwdcrs can provide
good results when used in conjunc
tion with baiting programs The
jsowder is ingested by the rats and
mice during their groom ing exer
u se s
They should be placed
strategically in burrowx. along run
ways, in bait station entryways and
dark sec lulled com er areas T ra c k
ing powders should never be used if
there is a chance that rats or mice
may track the powder into food,
lood containers or food preparation
surfaces
Rat or mouse traps can be very ef
fective placed in the nxlents’ runway
and hiding areas T o make a trap
more effective, expand the surface
area o f (he trap trigger by adding a
piece of sc reen Sim ply cut out a 2 "
x 2 " square of screen and attach it
to the trigger
Another effective bait to use on all
traps, toxicants and glue boards is
peanut butter Rats and mice love it
and w ill go to great lengths to attain
it O n glue boards and bait boxes,
dab the peanut butter in the middle
to attract the rodent to the toxicant^
or glue O n a trap, put the peanut
butter in a piece o f gau/e and tie this
little- ball t«> the trigger Th is w ill
cause the rodent to pull or tug at the
bait and the rest is history .

North Morrow
Vector Control
District
Has mg a colony o f mice naive in
to your house can he a very nasty
situation Mass m igration into a
home generally occurs when the out
side starts to cool down especially in
the tall
l ast winter I came in contact with
a very K id rat infestation problem.
It was a situation where the N orw a y
rats had lots of food, water and
shelter
At this particular site
elimination of the rats would have
been impossible, but reduction was
a must Rats were every w here-you
know you have a rut problem when
they’re visible during the daylight
hours I tried various kinds o f con
trol methods and had the problem
under control in two weeks.
F o r effective, long term rat and
mouse control, use an integrated ap
proach o l sanitation and rodent-
proofing supplemented with toxicant
or trapping program s
Because
rodents must have food, water and
harborage to survive, removal or
reduction o f these factors alone can
have a tremendous impact on rodent
populations and reproductive rates.
Many different rodent control par-
grams exist Baiting is one type or
rodent control Most hutting pnv-
grams utilize anticoagulant roden
tic ides Anticoagulants are classified
usually as multiple dose or single
dose F o r initial dean outs and d if
ficult rodent jobs, the newer single
dose baits perform very well. F o r
maintenance programs, the nultiplc
dose baits are usually quite effective.
I prefer to use bail stations with
these anticoagulant baits because
they w ill provide a secure environ
ment in which the rodent can feed,
but they also protect people, com
panion anim als and not-target
wildlife Make sure to use fresh
high quality bait, maintain the bait
freshness by protecting it from dirt,
dust and moisture and ensure rat bail
contact by proper placement o f the
bait within the most active areas
