Board members answer
school budget
How can you justify busing children to school
who live only two to three blocks from school?
T o adequately answer this question, one has to
be aware o f the past events that created this
situation.
In 1979. when Sam HourdmanGrade School was
occupied, a group of parents met with school ad
myisitrators to disc uvs the hazards of children walk
in | io and from v h<Nil using Wilson Road The street had no sidewalks
.uni the posted speed was 40 mph To ensure the safety of the children,
it * .is decided to bus them to sch«*>l In 1982, part of Wilson Road was
repaved and w idened I I k ongtanl plan was to include a bike path which
would also allow children to walk to school As can he seen unlay, there
is no bike path or sidewalk on Wilson Road
In lingon. at \C Houghton tirade School, children who live south
of Highway 750 are bussed to the grade school. This again is a safety
issue I here are no stop lights or cross walks to allow safe crossing of
the children.
A s both parents and las payers we want our children to travel to and
from school safely as well as require the schix>! district to use our buses
in the most economical manner If a path or sidewalk were added to
W ilso n Road, and crosswalks and slop lights were added in Irngon on
Highway 7 V). then our children could safely walk to school
Ihe questions that rise from this writer arc:
Why was the original plan regarding Wilson Road not adhered to?
How much will it cost the taxpayer to put in sidcwalks.stoplights?
Is it cheaper to transport our children by bus than pay for sidewalks
and stoplights?
In conclusion, the justification lor busing children to school who only
live two to three blocks away is that we parents want our children to
travel safely to school Parents initiated this, not the school district
