Raising money for the communi
ty is an activity relished with en
thusiasm by a group of women in the
Board nun and Irngon area
A little over a year ago. 19 ladies
staned a chapter of Soroptinust In
temattonal, a non profit business,
professional, and working women's
service organisation dedicated to the
betterment of the community, in
North Morrow County
They have been successful in the
challenging task of fund raising
"W e arc good at raising money,"
said President Lynn Prag. “ now we
need to set goals for spendmng the
funds, for putting it back into the
community.”
"Our first projects have been for

scholarships were Triru Hellberg. of
Irngon. anti Israel (Bingo) (ianvoa.
Boardnun. SUM) was given to tour
young people to go to 4 H summer
camp, and silver dollar prizes were
given to Irngon grade school
students from A C. Houghton
Elementary for the best posters
depicting Irrigon's Clean Up Week,
to name a few of the ways the Sorop
timists have started helping the com
munities. according to Judy Miller,
corresponding secretary
"Money raised last year was
mostly from our FunShine F.sprcss
and yard signs," said Miller
The FunShine Express was a
chartered, first class bus trip to the
Tri-Cities for a shopping • spree
Tickets were sold for $27 for the day
with a continental breakfast served
on board by the Soroptmust's, gifts,
roses, lunch, champagne and soft
music as part of the package
Because it was such a success last
year, there have been two buses
chartered for this year's December
5 shopping spree, according to Vice
President Pat McClintock.

such as Happy Valentines Day or I
Love You will be written on them
and they will be delivered to the ad
dress you designate and planted’ in
the front yard in the wee hours of the

man. is a new fund raiser the group
has added to their list T ables can be
purchased for $10 for anyone with
new or used merchandise to sell
"W e are just going into our se
cond year we have a lot of ideas to
put to use." said Miller
Programs have been poresented at
the regular meetings by such people
as F.E. (Ed) Glenn, representing
Tidewater Barge Lines, enlighitng
the ladies on the current status of the
prospective Tidewater solid waste
landfill in Morrow County

Parents were pleasantly surprised
when a new approach to educating
them as to what their children arc ex
posed to when they enter those
hallowed halls known as school was
presented to them recently at Ihe
Riverside High open house
Display», demonstrations. and ac
tivities such as watching a taxider
my demonstration, bronze being
melted down in a 2.200 degree oven
and (hen poured into molds, or
videos explaining the reason why
you should hook your seat belt, plus
eating goodies in the homemaking
mom. were all part of the intriguing
evening
Student body officers and
members of the National Honor
Society guided parents to all comers
of the schixil where pfxxography. the
yearbook, student prepared foods,
and student computer graphics were
displayed.
A nattion lab and a lab showing
erro r o f m easurem ent were
displayed by the advanced science
students in the biology lab room, a
tour of ihe woodworking shop was
offered, and iXher activities were
available thruugh-out the evening for
parents to observe

mission, set up their own display ol
Students Against Drunk Driving
(SADD) SADD is rax a school ac
tivity. but a student initiated program
staned by a high school hockv coach
in Missouri, after three of his
athletes were killed in separate ac
cidents during a one-month period
Alcoholic beverages were involved
Parents were each given tickets
and through < hi ( the evening winn
ing numbers were drawn and an
m hi need over the loudspeaker for
prizes donated by teachers and
merchants.

The purpose of FCL. Extension
Program Assistant Birdinc Tullis
said, is to encourage participation in

level Volunteers received in depth
training in these topics in exchange
for volunteer service two days per
nxwth The trained volunteers work
in teaching roles with local groups,
individuals and organizations, as
well as with Extension staff and
volunteers.
At the institute, participants will
hear state and local speakers and
