By S ean Warren
The lone football player of the
week is Junior Richard Basford who
recovered three fumbles in last
week's loss to Wallowa
Basford also made several
touchdown saving tackles to stop
Wallowa drives He is the starting
defensive end for the Cardinals.
The lone Volleyball Player of the
Week is sophomore front court
starter Amy Wagcnblatf who played
excellent on defense, diving and
hustling constantly in Saturday's
tournament in Wahtonka
.
By Sean Warren
From the opening of the game it
was apparent to everyone who at
tended that the score would be verv
high. After a very shaky first
quarter, the Cardinals settled down
and started to get the offense into the
game
The Cardinals fought back in the
second quarter when senior quarter
back Kevin Ball scored two
touchdowns and a two point convcr
sion Ball's first touchdown was a
one-yard run and his second in the
half was on an eight-yrd run
The Cardinals outscored the
Wallowa Cougars in the second
quarter 14-13 bringing the halftime
score to 31-14
The third quarter action favored
the Cougars with the exception of
freshman kickoff return specialist
Jim Holt/ who returned the pigskin
90 yrds for a touchdown Junior
laiinaca u u sn n rauoerg ana
sophomore fullback Shawn Hams
both added key blocks in Holtz's
return The touchdown was the first
one for the freshman who has just
recently worked his way into the
starting lineup
Cardinals lineman Gary Rea also
entered the scoring column for one
of the first times in his football
career scoring the conversion point
Ball added his third touchdown of

The varsity Fillies arc now I -0 for
league play, a fine start on the road
to the district play-offs They pull
ed off a close win at home against
the Umatilla Vikings, Thursday.
Sept 24 The match was over in two
games, with scores of 15-12, 15-13.
The Fillies arc running a new of
fense. with the setter coming from
the back row. and it seems to he
coming together for them
The Fillies did not fare so well;
however, in the Weston-McEwen

they placed seventh of eight learns
In their first game. Heppner lost
to Elgin (eventual winner of the tour
nament), 5-15. 14 16 Their second

JVs fall to Umatilla
By Shannon McLaughlin
Two serving rotation penalties
and a "foot fault on a serve” dimm
cd Heppners JV chances of winning
the game and match during game
two against Umatilla
Guntc three. Heppner had trouble
receiving serves and capitalizing
points when they needed them
Bright spots for the JV Fillies were
outstanding play by freshman
Tiffany Harrison and good hustle by
first year players. Dulcic Palmer and
Kim Slookcy, both sophomores
Serving was led by Nikki Brisbois
The philosophy of the JV and "C ”
learn volleyball programs at Hcpp
ncr High School is to put more em
phasis on teamwork, experience and
playing tunc for all the team players
during each match Sometimes, in
order to play each player, a win is
difficult to produce but playing
everyone at this level is more unpor
tant than playing only six or seven
best players to win Our JV team is
comprised of twelve players
The Heppner " C ” team played
their first league match and first
game this season, after a month long
wait to play Their scores were
13-15. 15 2 . 15 6
Melanie Gales and Amy Greenup
turned in a fine game with their
overall play and serving
Our serving was not up to par at
times, but being their first game of
the season. Coach Susan Hislcr was
pleased with their overall play She
said "We are only going to improve
as we gam s o u k experience, and I
am pleased that " C " team is such
a hustling group "
Kristi O'Brien. Candy Harris and
Jcanmc Patterson also moved well
on the court
