Interim at Ione ‘ felt righ t’ pastor says
I
.
J
When (he phone rang. I respond
ed immediately realizing that this it
what I was trained for. called to do.
and it felt right, the Rev. Isa (Sara)
Brown said o f the intenm ministry
at lone's United Church o f Christ
Escaping from California to lone
at first l thought I was getting sick
because the air here is so pure
W e’re happy to be here, lone peo
pie are so cordial and we have been
received so grandly
" I perceive m yself as being on a
journey with the people o f my
C hu rch," Brown continued, "w e're
on a journey together seeking at one
ment with one another and with
Ciod." The difference is that I may
have had some training others have
not had. she said " I hope that
somehow I'm being an instrument to
help somebody grow and to develop
a more profound relationship with
God. because most times ministers
don't see dramatic evidence that they
arc accomplishing anything "
Sometimes I'm uncomfortable in
the pulpit, above the rest o f the con
grcgation I did a community service
where everyone sat around the Altar
and read scripture A circle is very
democratic because no one is above
anyone else, she said Everyone con
tributed and shared
After all.
" w e 'r e all in the same boat,
sometimes it's rotten, sometimes it's
wonderful, but w e're all together
An interim ministry is different
because the pastor acts as a bridge
between (he previous minister and
the one who will come Not only
Brow n's ministry, but also her life
seems to be a journey After gradua
non from Buckncll University in
Pennsylvania with a bachelor o f arts
degree in psychology and sociology,
she was a social worker for three
years then moved to New York Ci-
Rev Isa (Sara) Brown
ty where she worked as an executive
secretary at Columbia University
and for Alistar Cook During this
lime she studied acting, modern
dance and voice, was the chief
character actress for off-Broadway
and in summer stock performances,
and began working toward a masters
degree in elementary education.
From New York City, she return
cd to her "h om etow n " Rochester.
New York, where she entered C o l
gate R o c h c s te r'B e c k s le y Flail
seminary (and met fellow student
and former Hcppneritc Rev Ed
Watts ) During her senior year, she
received a call to a church in Lisle,
New York, which she served as a
full tunc licensed pastor until her or
dination in June. I9K<)
"B ein g a student again keeps you
y ou n g," Isa said " I felt no genera
tion gap at the seminary, only close
friends I've always had an insatiable
curiosity about life and love learn
ing. reading, travel and meeting new
people **
A lto in Rochester, taught at a
community college and met and
married Hasa Brown That was 11
years ago. he said, and now I'm lear
mng what it is to be a house husband
a pastor's husband all at the same
time Though I suspect pastors
husbands have it better than pastors'
wives just because there aren't as
many o f us and w e're not expected
to do as much, he said
•
Before their marriage Hasa serv
ed in the U S Army, worked con
struction trades, taught himself elec
trical work, was a forklift operator,
brewmastcr. and restaurant owner
and manangcr
From Rochester. New York, the
couple moved to Ft Bcrthnld, ND.
where Hasa earned his G. E D and
attended United Theological Semin
ary for a ycat (hiring her ministry at
the church. Isa also taught comntuni
ty college For a time she ministered
to three churches on the reservation
and taught classes in Indian Culture
which, she said. Indians on the reser
vat ion loved because many know
very little about their culture
From Ft Berthold. their journey
continued to North Fork. California.
45 miles North o f Fresno in the Sier
ras and Grace Community United
Church o f Christ She served the
small church for two years until they
moved to Fresno and became house
parents for six teen-age boys with
severe emotional problems
After Hasa fell, and injured his
knee, they left the group home and
b ecau se Isa q u alified for an
emergency teaching certificate in
C a lifo rn ia , she did substitute
teaching for grades kindergarten
sixth in the Fresno area " I was
prepared to continue with that (his
fall while doing volunteer ministry
I planned a service o f the Word and
Sacrament for early mornings, adult
ed u catio n c la s s e s in N ative
American spirituality, a course on
dreams, and a class o f spiritual
growth through drama. I was also
going to do a five-week course with
battered women at a Center for
Domestic Violence
W hen the interim is over at lone.
" I think maybe another interim for
awhile Also. I'm seriously con
sidering returning to school for a
masters degree in counseling for ac
creditation in California to open a
private practice It's difficult to plan
the future, th ou gh ," she said,
"becau se life changes suddenly. I
feel God has a hand in what we do,
and it's best to go with my intui
tion ”

Hunters are getting geared up for opening
weekend o f the general deer season which starts Oc-
tober 3.
It's that time again to drag the deer rifle out and
clean the dust o ff You might wnat (o go out and
shoot a couple rounds, just to make sure ole Betsy
shoots as straight as she always has
We should see a productive deer season this year
There are a good number o f young bucks just
waiting to be harvested But like always, there's a
lot o f competition, so you’ve got to be on your toes.
It doesn't hurt to do some pre season scouting Not only to locate some
deer but also to line up the land you want to hunt
Some o f the hunting ground in the Heppner Unit has been leased by
Hunting clubs So it would be wise to take a drive up to your favorite
hunting spot to be sure you still have one
The wife and I loaded up (he kids and went for a drive to Upper Rhea
Creek We saw a lew deer, but the only bucks wc saw were on leased
for hunting ground
The grouse season is still open lor hunting and there are plenty o f those
tasty birds available
Diey re a little bit scattered due to hunting pressure I haven't seen
any blue grouse yet. but I have bagged a few ruffed grouse Most o f
the ruffs I bagged were (his year's birds So (hey must have had a fairly
good hatch (his spring
This weeks up of the sportsman's cap goes to Terry Thompson o f
Heppner for providing great hunting and fishing (or local sportsmen for
many years
