This spring I noticed a mass
migration of small ants invading my
kitchen and utility room I asked
around to find out what kind of ant
I was dealing with and the most com
mon response was the "Sugar Ant” .
This is prohably not the proper name
for this ant. but it docs have a
tendency to go for sweets I hinking
things couldn't be any worse,
another ant variety moved into my
sidewalk and grass area amund the
back door step My guess is that I
was dealing with possibly three
species of ants the Pharaoh Ant.
Thief Ant and Pavement Ant
’ All three of these ant species arc
relatively harmless as far as bites are
concerned Ihc Ihief Ant and Pave
ment Ant both possess stingers, but
they arc seldom used These ants are
classified in the nuisance category
Just their presence alone creates the
nuisance I remember one morning
I got up and went into the kitchen to
make coffee only to be introduced to
literally hundreds of ants on my kit
chcn counter As far as I was con
ccrncd. this simply was not accep
table So I quickly started wiping the
ants in to the sink with a dish doth
giggling with pleasure as I scalded
them to death with hot tap water
After my wife finally got me calm
ed down I remember that I was a
vector control manager and there
must be a logical more sensible way
to control this problem
After my unprofessional behavior
in the kitchen. I quickly got ready for
work and decided to feed the dog
Her dish is located near the back
door in the utility room Still being
morning. I sleepily dumped so u k
doggie chow in the dish, but the dog
wouldn't cat it As I was thinking
how ungrateful the dog was until I
noticed that the doggie chow was
moving At closer inspection. I
discovered that those darn 'Sugar
Ants" like doggie chow too
After taking care of the dog. I was
ready to go to work so I kissed my
wife good bye and walked out the
back door only to find hundreds of
small ants doing major excavation
work on my sidewalk Of course this
meant war
First. I did research on the
varieties I was working with The
Pharaoh Ant. is very small being
yellow to reddish brown in color li
lends to be about an UK " long It
got its name because this ant spec ies
was mistakenly believed to he one of
the "plagues" of the Pharaohs, men
Honed in the Old Testament Swanns
of males and females arc mg uncom
mon. especially during mating
Pharaoh Ants arc capable of feeding
on a variety of materials There are
reports of them infesting and feeding
on sweets (syrups, jellies, cakes.
IUK.es> and fatty foods (grease,
meals, other insects) In hospitals
these ants have been found in open
wounds, apparently feeding on ex
posed tissue, and have been en
countered inside pieces of sterile
cqoipriH'nt While a serious visual
and food infesting pest. Pharaoh
Ants have linked with spreading in
feet khi s diseases
The Thief Ant. one of the smallest
arils that invades the home in onlv
methods for eradnating these ants
First, you could use a contact spray
insecticide, but this will only
eliminate those ants directly expos
cd at the lime of application
Residual sprays can be effective on
ly if they are applied directly to the
nest You must be careful in doing
this because you may cause the col
ony to divide, creating a greater pro
blcm Barrier treatment with a
residual dust or spray is only tern
porary A newer more effective
method is using selective baits such
as Boric acid with mint apple telly,
liver and egg These used in com
hmation can result in a significant
reduction in ant population Keep in
mind (hat bail can take up to one or
three months to totally control the
situation The bait must also be at
tractive to the ant as a primary food
source As with all baits and insec
nodes they must be carefully plac
ed with safety and effectiveness in
mind If the problem persists please
call your local pest control operator
for assistance.
Remember, simply controlling
these ants, especially the Pharaoh
ant. is usually not adequate or acccp
table, elimination must be theobjee
live, and the objective must be
achieved especially in hospitals and
food service operations
I lb " long The Thiel ant got its
name because the worker ants will
rob other ant nests of their larva or
food In ihohomc they will feed on
meals, cheese, grains, tats, and
sweets Thiel ants become a pest
problem in two ways As with many
insect species, their presence as
foragers creates a nuisance for the
homeowner fhese ants also con
sume and contaminate stored food
items TFic Thief ant is yellowish or
bright brown in color and closely
resembles the Pharaoh ant
The Pavement ant is nuire com
mon to the Northeastern United
Stales hut has migrated to the
Midwest and California The Pave
ment ant is about I lb' to 3/ lb " in
length and their bodies arc covered
with thick, stiff hairs They arc
brownish black in color Pavement
ants are rather slow moving insects
The workers have the ability to bite
and sting, but they are not very ag
gressive The occurance of Pave
ment ants is increasing, and it is
found frequently in basements and
slahon grade homes Nests occur
outdoors usually under stones, along
edges and cracks in pavement or
next to buildings They usually will
seek either sweet or greasy materials
to Iced on. but they will also feed on
insect remains and have been
reported as pests of eggplants,
peanuts and strawberries
There are many ly pcs of control
