Four return from Girls’ State Swanson
Umatilla Refuge islands open to public
reunion held

Four Morrow County high school
students have recently relumed from
Oregon Girls Slate held June 28 July
3 on ‘he University of Oregon cam
pus in Eugene
Jill Conklin and Benji Pearvin
from Heppner and Karla Daviioa
and Rondi Tews from lone par
ticipated in the week long event
which teaches how a government is
structured.
Sponsored by the American
legHtn Auxiliary, girls from around
.the stale form a mock government in
which county and state officials arc
elected to serve for the week Along
with being spin up into counties, the
girls were also split up into Na­
tionalist and Federalist parties
To be chosen to attend Girls State,
high school students must be
sophomores or juniors and are then
selected on the basis of leadership,
character
and
honesty,
cooperatives**, community par
ticipation and service, and
scholarship
"I would encourage anyone who
has the opportunity to go to do so,"
Conklin said
"I recommend it highly to anyone
who is interested." Pearvin added
"Girls State was a great ex­
perience "
4-H club donates roses to lone park
There were 24 member* of the
four generation* of the family of
Irene (Miller) Swanson and the late
Gar Swanson together in Heppner.
Sand Hollow and lone during the last
weekend in June On Friday. June
26. they all met for dinner at the
Heppner duplex of Grandmother
Irene
On Saturday Kenneth and Jean
Ann (Swanson) Turner arranged
boating and water skiing for the
younger folks on the lake above
Willow Creek Dam. and then they
had the 24 at their Sand Hollow
home for a harbeque dinner
On Sunday. after all had attended
morning mass at St Patrick's, the
group mused to the family home at
lone where Jim and Monica (Circle)
Swanson live and where everyone
enjoyed the afternoon and another
barbecue
The oldest Swanson son. Dennis,
and his wife Joan came from
Auburn. Washington, with their
daughters Erin and Toni and son
Mike Swanson, his wife Jackie and
their young sons Dan and Logan
who live in Buckley. Washington
The Dennis Swanson's youngest
daughter Kellie Phinney who lives in
Portland could not come because of
the birth of a new baby daughter.

from Redding. California Their two
older daughters. Kristen and Kendall
could not come bec ause of their jobs
After the reunion John and Kathy
drove to Kennewick to visit her
parents the McMahans for a few
days.

public use effective July I. The
public is invited to enjoy wildlife
related activities, including fishing,
wildlife observation and
photography until the islands close
again on October I.
Umatilla Refuge is open to the
public from $ a m to 10 p m dai­
ly All night activities including cam­
ping are prohibited
Refuge leaflets are available at all
area boat launches, access points at
the McCormack Unit, refuge head
quarters in the Post Office building
in Umatilla The public is encourag
ed to obtain and read a refuge leaflet
as a number of special regulations
limiting public use and access are in
effect
