Hickey executive vice president of
Tidewater Barge Lines “ We are
still checking into the matter, he
said Although other prospective
sites were considered. Hickey said
the company now "prefers to pur
sue locating at the Morrow County
site because we have already done
some on site investigation We think
the person bringing the measure up
had some questions about our pro
posal. which we expect to answer at
the public hearing ''
A public hearing on Tidewater's
application fora condmonal use per
mil to allow a landfill in the Finley
Butte area is scheduled for 7 30 p m
Wednesday. June 24 at the school
district office in Lexington
Hickey said the company must
provide information to the Depart
ment of Environmental Quality that
will address, in detail, all item* the
petitioners are concerned about.
Under the Tidewater proposal, a
600-acre landfill would be establish
ed in the Finley Butte area 16 miles
south of Boardman
Residential and commercial gar
bage collected from communities
along the Columbia Ri»cr would be
barged to Boardman. unloaded al the
Port of Morrow , and trucked to the
disposal site
The garbage would all be
transported in sealed containers, and
when dumped at the landfill, covered
daily The site could take up lo 2.500
tom of waste per day. and last for
25 year*.
The site would not take toxic
waste. Tidewater emphasized
Our major concern is that people
maintain the right to preserv e the mi
age of the county. Mason said We
arc encouraged that much effort the
last few years has gone to upgrade
the image of the county in order to
attract industry here We're assum
mg that the image St Johns has as
a "garbage dump" could be taken
a step further, and Morrow County
could gam a reputation as a in state
dump "We think that image runs
counter to the image we've been try
mg to build and that people shouid
have the right to say 1 1 they want that
image changed.' he said
Another concern. Mason said, is
that the landfill operate the way they
say it is supposed to "We were pro
mised a clean operation when a
feedlot located near Boardman
Anyone who lives here knows that
it does smell We were promised
quality assurances, but the feedlot
has never operated the way it was
supposed to
If the mcusuic is on the ballot and
voters say they want a landfill in the
county. Wastcch can come in and
develop the site and will prohablv do

County
If a petition filed at the County
C lerk'* office meets all re
quirement*. it will appear on the
November ballot. Voter approval
would then be necessary before a
landfill in Mono* County could ac
cept garbage from outside the

Petitioner* Dean Mason and jerry

begin gathering signatures on the
petitions anytime, but have been ad
vised by County Clerk Barbara

29 Anyone objecting to the ballot
language can ask the Circuit Court

Bloodsworth said, the ballot
language would change Signature*

a new ballot.
The petition was not designed to
stop a landfill at Finley Buttes in
Morrow County proposed by

at Finley Buttes is not operating by
November, he said, voter* will say
if they want it here
Should the measure meet all re
