Eugene paleontologist visits elementary school

met him earlier in the year and con­
vinced him to share his knowledge
with Hcppncr students
Gustalson presented information
to the second grade classes whieh
were involved in a nu)or unit ol
study on dinosaurs Also involved in
sessions with Gustafson were fifth
grade and Advanced Studies
Classes He answered questions
about dinosaurs and described the
role of cxo(k terranes (pieces of con
tinents attached to other continental
masses due to tectonic movement) in
influencing Eastern Oregon geology
and fossil finds
Gustafson received his doctorate
from tire University of Texas and has
traveled extensively in Oregon

Tidewater Barge Lines has filed its application with the Morrow County Planning Commission to obtain a
Conditional Use Permit to develop a sanitary landfill at Finley Buttes near Lexington. Oregon This
proposed landfill will be used lo service the solid waste disposal needs ot Morrow County residents It will
also have the capacity to serve other Columbia and Snake River system communities, including the greater
Portland Vancouver metropolitan area It's a project that will bring many economic development benefits
to Morrow County in the form of jobs, revenues and an expanded tax base
** New Jobs for Morrow County —
There will be between TO V) new local jobs directly created by the linley Buttes landfill with a
total annual payroll of $<>00,000 to $1.000.000. T hese include jobs as heavy equipment operators, truck
drivers, and operations managers and administrators The Finley Buttes Landfill will also create another 55-
65 local business jobs with a total annual payroll of $450,000 to $750.000
** New Revenues for Morrow County --
If developed as a landfill, (he property al Finley Buttes will pay Morrow County between
$110.000 to $120,000 each year in land and personal property taxes Based on a rate of $ 50 per ton, the
Finley Buttes Landfill would also contribute annually between $'>2.000 to $460,000 in special use fees lo
Morrow County. Annual support to the school district and community college from the new payrolls will
be between $47.000 and $77.000.
• • New Revenues for the Port of Morrow --
Development of the Linley Buttes Landfill would put the dock facilities at the Port of Morrow to
full use and help make it a profitable operation Based on a rate of $60 per container, the Port of Morrow
would receive between $525.000 and $I,8‘>O.OUO in container lees annually from the I inley Buttes I andtill.
Greut care has been taken in planning the Finley lluttcs Landfill.
The Finley Buttes landfill is an environmentally sound projec t in every respect. For example. • the solid
waste will he sorted for recycling before it is brought to the Port of Morrow • 1‘reliminary geotechnical
studies indicate the Finley Buttes site is ideally suited for use as a sanitary landfill • I he solid waste will
be shipped in sealed containers to prevent any problems with litter or visual impact • Solid waste
deposited at the landfill will be covered with six inches of dirt daily • Trucks routes from the Port to the
landfill do not pass by a single residence • Wasted», the landfill operators, have the reputation and
experience to manage the Fmley Buttes Landfill to the highest standards.
