Letters to the Editor
Voting no doesn’t change school policies
To the Editor
For the last two yean. I have serv
ed on the Budget Committee for the
Morrow County School District I
have visited with many voters who
have valid concerns over School
District Policy I realize that this
year's budget may not address all of
their concerns I would tike to take
this opportunity to explain why.
Voting no. on a school budget on
ly tells the committee that you do not
like the budget Voting no does not
say cut sports, close small schools,
reduce transportation, curtail hot
lunch programs or cut salaries
These aspects o f education arc all
pan o f existing school district policy
I f you disagree with the district's
policy, the place to change it is in
discussion w ith the school hoard or
with the administrators o f our
schools. Voting no may be the
easiest way o f saying you disagree
with existing policies Voting no.
without standing up and saying why
or without voicing a concern in a
punicular area, w ill only leave those
in charge o f running our schools

guessing
In formulating this year's budget,
we tried to offer all o f the existing
policy requirements in the most
economic way possible and I feel we
succeeded Voters, must realize that
the schools electric bills continue to
rise, insurance premiums arc higher,
just like their own, along with other
areas A ll expenses must be includ
cd in the budget The majority o f
these expenses can not he cut,
without changing district policy,
breaking contracts or breaking the
law. The budget committee did not
feel they could lake it upon
themselves to change school district
policy without more community
input
Although this year's budget is
higher than last year's I feel the
quality o f education our children
receive, w ill be lower. Cuts were
made in areas where they could he.
in order to make up for increases
where we had no say It is now too
late for a no vote lo change school
district policy this year A no vote
now, w ill only decrease the quality
o f education futhcr
I am sure that this year's budget
w ill not be acceptable to every one
in the district We must realize lhat
what one individual views as fat.
another pervin may view as meal I
feel we have taken all of the fat out

A t school budget election time
draw» near. I feci as a former Mur
row County School Board Member,
I am writing this letter to give my
support to both (the Board Members
and Budget Committee Having
worked on both I realize the many.
many hours o f giving of their time
freely to present a reasonable budget
and each time it is voted down That
means that many more hours and
more expense i t involved in
publishing, printing ballots and h ir
ing clerks lo work on the election
hoard
Some o f the issues lhai have been
questioned such as P E , Band.
Music, Art, Counselors and Special
Ed Classes, our local hoard has no
control over These classes arc stale
requirements They are required for
a school to receive their accredita
lion Classes such as Chapter I and
Migrant Ed Classes are not sup
ported by local taxes, they are
Federally funded and are also
requirements.
There are many expenses such as
supplies for the upkeep o f the
buildings, textbooks (which always
have a price increase each year),
electricity, water and fuel for the
buses arc items the School Board has
no control over the increase o f the
cost The items are very necessary
lo run a school.
Let's not short change our
children Let's get out and support
our schools. Board Members and
Budget members I f you have a
grievance about schools, teachers,
administrators or Board members at
lend the meetings and voice your
concerns, but please don't let this
cause problems for our students and
schools
