recently as two months ago I spoke
against dividing the county into tsso
medical serv ice divlricts and in lavor
ol a unified approach
But I'm leeling so alone that it's
becoming very hard to continue The
recent race lor Port Commissioners
is a case in point The outcome, of
course, was lulls predictable Hire«
political unknowns versus three

rhetoric was enlightening and may
cause some gradual change
W hat slicks in the craw , however,
was the ad placed hy the lone Agri
Business Counsel and the Mcppncr
Chamber of Commerce Dial ad
urged voters to lasor three can
didates to secure "South end
representation" on the Commission
Persistent claims that place of
residence " is the most important tac
lor in selecting political office
holders w ill ncccssarils lead to the
conclusion that the worst possible
candidate trom one area is better

County, as evidenced in this elec
lion, is truly hcarlwarming and on
outraging I was especially pleased
to sec the positive voting from the
Heppner area It nukes working in
lone, a positive voting community,

terested in working toward the giaid
of all the pieople. hut rather chose to
be divisive, disruptive and provin

cooperative attitude toward any pro­
ject which might renvaely henefit the
South end The fire was fueled by
the election eve letter which took ad
vantage ol provincial paranoia and
deliberately misrepresented a North

authors rely professionally on
dispute, controversy and our inabili­
ty to get along with each other
Part of the damage done in this
election could he mended hy the
three candidtates' stepping forward
and publicly rejecting the idea that

where they live Part of the damage
