Frank Matter of the Sixty Six

Morrow County's Const rv ation
Man of the Year at a W heat league
meeting Friday night
Chemical tallow and minimum
tillage have kept cheat grass, pro
bably the biggest detriment to high
yields, under control and wind ero
sHin at a minimum, he said Dry land
wheat y teldcd 12 bu acre during the
70s and now yields 47 bu acre
Blowing stul was so bad at the
Sixty Six dunng the 70s that it would
cause wrecks on the highwas and
sometimes even in the fields Du
e-reek would fill with Kussian This
tie The soil is predominantly scry
fine sandy loam with a high risk ot
wind erosion when the ground cover
is removed
In the early 70s the land was rod
weeded as nuns as sesen times a
year. Mader said "W e try to get bs
with as few as two We re moving
toward no till, although we mas not
go completely with no till, but use-
some chemical fallow also " Fach
time you work the ground, you lose
moisture, he explains, so we save as
much moisture as we can by work
ing the ground as little as possihlc
Fertili/er placement is also impor
tant for maximum yields, he con
tinued With minimum tillage, ler
tili/er is placed right under the seed
so it is there when the seed is reads
for it
He has put in his own lertili/er
facility at the ranch tor added con
venience and cost savings, he said
Because the area is so windy dur
ing the spraying season, ordinary
spray rigs cannot be used He has
added a hood to his spraser which,
he claims, increases its efficiency
and allows its use in winds up to 25
mph
