Oregon receives A + in education
T o the Editor
I hope you vs ill print Vern Dun
can's recent message to educators in
our state
Many good things arc happening
in our schools Often ice hear only
the (legalise aspects o f our social
institutions
I strongly feel our local newspaper
can do a great deal to create a
positive climate for education and
business in M orrow County You
can help by spreading the good word
that Oregon received an A + rating
in academic performance from
E ducation S e c reta ry . W illia m

Oregon education received an A ♦
for its academic performance in a
report card released in Eebruary by
Education Secretary W illiam Ben
nett "O re g o n has continued to im
prose on its already high test score
perform an ce." Bennett told the na
lion, "ranking second out o f 22 S A T
(Scholastic Aptitude le s t) states on
S A T performance, and tying tor
fourth in S A I gains last year
Eor once, the media talked about
Oregon school successes not about
school closures "O re g o n 's Class o f
Kb Banks N o 2 in the U S " said
a headline in The Oregonian
"O r e g o n is Best in the W e s t" said
the Statesman Journal
The report card, also called a wall
chart, includes the latest available
data lor state comparisons and rank
irnrs. with 19H2 Ihc year before " A
Nation at R isk" was published as the
benchmark vear It provides data
on college entry exams, graduation
rules, teacher salaries, expenditures,
and characteristics o f the student
populations
This is the lourth report card
issued bv a U S Secretary of Educa
lion But Bennett divided states into
those which primarily use the S A T
and those which use the American
C ollege test Only New Hampshire
was ahead of Oregon on the S A T
list
O regon's math and verbal
scores totaled 9.M) in 19Kb New
Hampshire, with 9.15. was first
O th ers in the top fiv e w ere
Delaware. 917. Vermont. 916. and
Connecticut. I N
That's not had
company.
Although v in e think the SAT is
not the best yardstick for measuring
academic performance, the public
sees the S A T as the " D o w Jones"
o f education
Liven those who
critici/c the SA T had to he impress
cd with O regon's dramatic 24 point
gain in I9H5 The best news is our
scores are increasing while the
percentage o f Oregon students tak
ing the S A T increases Forty six
percent o f out seniors take the S A T
In my travels in Oregon and across
the country, people think highly o f
O regon education They know that
O regon schools certainly rank
among the nation's elite They a lv i
know that Oregon is a stale where
schools close The same day Bennett
announced his report card, a reporter
fo r the I'h ila d c lp h ia Inqu irer
newspaper called my o ffic e to ask
about school closures in Oregon
The legislature is working hard to
submit a "sa fety n e t" measure to
Oregon voters m M ay. not |ust
because closures are had lor educa
lion, hut because they are had for
business and economic development
W e need to remind ourselves that
high test scores, especially when
they are applauded by the (J S
Secretary o f Education, arc also
good for business and economic
developm en t
L e t ’ s make our
acad em ic re c o rd be part o f
" O r e g o n '» Comeback " Let's tell
businesses inside and outside ( tregon
about our educational achievement
Something right must be happen
mg in Oregon's schools Recent state
and local efforts to im prove educa
tion are paving o ff Much o l the
credit belongs to those who make it
happen in the c lassroom O regon's
teachers and students
