displays souviners of Thailand
Big. bustling and beautifully brilliant Bangkok is the largest city ot
southeast Asia and the cuptial ot Thailand where my older son Ross, my
daughter Ann and 1 have just spent eight exciting days visiting with our
dear Thai friends, sightseeing, shopping and losing the warm sunshine
Thailand, which is approximately the size ot the combination of Ltwh
and Arizona is fulled with gregarious, generous people who smile quicklv
and arc so helpful to strangers To me. the two outstanding features there
arc the orchids and the elephants, followed in close order by the breathtak
ing flowering trees, the spectacular Wats, the marvelous hotels and
restaurants and the nuns fascinating vistas along the rivers and in the moun
tains surrounding Chiang Mai. which I had not visited on my first trip to
this enchanting country over 22 years ago. about a vear before I moved
to Morrow County
In 190' B A C (before air conditioning! one couldn't keep going lull
days as we can now when almost every place all cars, taxi cabs, shops
and city homes are kept cooled, even during these, their winter months,
when the temperatures arc generally only 92 to 9S degrees in Bangkok and
thankfully cooler in the northern mountains This was a real change from
the snow and slush we left here before we flew away on our very fine Thai
International flight and after we returned to our own country
Bangkok's important buildings the Roval Palace and the thousands of
Wats iBuddist temples) are covered with gold leaf and mosaics ot m irror
colored glass and shining fragments of pottery which nuke all ot them ap
pear jewel like as they shimmer and glisten in the sunshine Population
figures are hard to confirm as there is a shitting flood of refugees from
neighboring Cambodia, luos, Burma and other areas who are housed in
the country , hopefully temporarily The entire country houses about 4t,
m illion people
Thailand is p rm urily (HOT l agricultural with rice its prme ipal crop and
ma|or export
We observed rice fields in nuns stages of growth and harvest in the
flatlands near Bangkok where three crops are produced annually A special
treat lor me was attending the provincial fait at Ayuthaya along the Chao
Praya River, the chief river ot the area which is a great water highway
This lair, nuny times as large as our Morrow Counts I air. had similarities
such as youth gnmp purtic ipwlion and countless demonstrations and displays
We enjoyed sharing delicious native foods We were most happily reunited
with our dear friend "M o o ' (Sinnapha kumphail who had shared our home
in Corvallis during her student years at Oregon State l niversity We were
so delighted to meet her tine husband "J c c d " (Santipong Nalgiaprawing)
a designer and architect, and this couple s darling I ' month old son " Jod"
whose actual first name is Superkorn A high spot of our trip was a visit
in their lovely, modem, three floor townhouse We sjvent part of everv day
with these kind, helpful, very generous friends ' M is t" visited Heppner
briefly just before B ill and I were married, and she attended our wedding
in the Methodist Church in Corvallis A ll ot my family is verv fond of her
She is putting her ( >Sl secretarial science training to good use as a sec relate
tor Caltex Oil Co . Bangkok. Ltd This family has every modern
convenience two air conditioned Mazda sedans and several servants, and
their home is in a prosperous residential neighNirhood Both " M in i" and
"Je e d " took vacation tune while we were there We three stayed in a
downtown hotel which was superior to any American or European hotel
I have known
W'c met and visited with persons from rnanv nations and we did all Ihe
usual tourists things and much more
As I close this dissertation iprobably more than you ever wanted to know
about Thailand) I must report that almost all lhai are Buddists and hold
to very high standards Over 70 percent of the people read and write All
children between 7 and 14 years are required to attend school where the
study of Fiiglish is compulsory. however, in remote rural areas school at
tendance cannot always be enforced because ot a shortage of teachers and
schools Thailand has seven universities and many good private schools
The Thai people arc very artistic, arc musically inclined, are home loving
and arc most devoted to their families
I hope that more people from Oregon and Washington w ill go to visit
this wonderful part ot the world and become better acquainted with Thailand
which is the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been ruled bv
a European power
