Meeting contradicted spirit of openness
To the Editor
It has come to my attention that
four members of the newly ap
pointed Medical Service transition
Team called an organizational
meeting and intentionally neglected
to notify the other three members o f
the group, or the public, of the lime
or location o f their meeting
This is an abject contradiction of
the spirit o f openness and honesty
that has prevailed thus far in the
County Court's attempt to resolve
the health care issuev
The meeting was held by Mr
D a lry m p le .

Icel offended hy the tactics o f these
representatives of the Court I have
written and spoken to Judge Carlsn.
asking that these four appointees he

In cloving. I would like to
apologize to the citizens o f the

Supports supercollider for county
To the Editor
Many citizens have been wonder
mg about my silence these last few
weeks If it is any reassurance, to
quote Mark T wain, rumors ol my
demise arc. al best, premature
I'm olten told that I never have a
nice thing to say when I write letters
to the editor I would like to take this
opportunity to say how nice the
weather is so I can go hack to com
plaining jhi>ut everything else
Over the nest several months,
many decisions w ill he nude that
w ill affect the future o f Morrow
County I think they should he
discussed openly Several Port Com
miss loners arc in favor o f a plan to
ship garbage upriver from Van
couver. Wa to a dumpsitc in Mor
row County The plan may also in
elude garbage from Portland as well
The Port manager and commis
sioners support such plans because
( 11 they produce jobs and (2) they
might increase county revenue
Perhaps more unfortuanlc is the
image o f Morrow County that is
conveyed to others I 'll he the first
to admit (hat the local economy is
had I hadn't realized that we were
so desperate that some would sell our
future pile ol garbage Frankly. I'm
shocked that land considered loo
precious for industrial development
by state environmental groups is
prime lor a dumping ground the sc
cond that Portland whistles I think
we have taken enough garbage from
west o f the Cascades And while we
may gain jobs in the shod run. what
industries w ill want to locate in a
county that is Oregon's garbage pile ’
Now some w ill argue that the gar
hage we get from Portland w ill h<
clean garbage (here w ill he no pollu
lion problem To them I reply
Siniplot History tells us that (he
Simplol tecdlot wasn't supposed to
smell It your sinuses jr c working
on a typical sunancr night, you know
better What guarantee do we
have th jt the Port's garbage pile w ill
he any better' W ill the ra t. and Hies
he instructed to shop in Hcrmiston ’
Perhaps the port w ill give us the
straight story prior to the March
elections
Another important issue is the
Supercollider
President Reagan
supports building the collider At
least 11 states are in competition to
he (he site Among sites in Oregon,
the Morrow Umatilla region is oh
stoutly the best, yet a state commit
tec favored a site in the Valley i The
valley vile is geologically ques
tionahlc and was chosen only lor
political reasons J
Governor Neil Goldschmidt w ill
make a decision on an Oregon site
sometime soon Many people have
tried to contact the (iovemor to con
vince him to reconsider the Hoard
man site atul to point out the value
of a site th jt could he supponed hy
three states So tar. to paraphrase the
G o v e rn o r,
we have gotten
“ Nowhere"
(ioldschmidt has no time to meet
with us
As luck would have it. Neil
(ioldschmidt w ill he visiting Hcpp
ner on the morning o f l-ehruary 20
With a final decision due in the nest
Ml days, that w ill literally he "the
last chance"to influence the dcsioon
nuking process As a member ol the
Supercollider Task Force, I know
that hundreds upon hundreds ot
average citizens were tx*h interested
and supportive More people came
to a single meeting here than to all
of the meetings in the Valley com
hinecl Hut Neil ( ioldschmidt doesn't
know that and it's time to let him
know
So what can the average person
d o ’ W ell, it the conventional ap

As an added bonus, you get In par
