Rep. Smith opposes Congressional pay raise
To the Kditor
While the lcder.il fioxcrnmcnl
struggles with the Inter a I dclicil.
cutting critical programs here and
there, a special committee has had
the gall to suggest our represen
talivcs should nuke more money I
understand it Congress does nothing,
a M4.INNI pay raise w ill go into
effect
O ur Second D is tric t C o n
gressman. Hoh Smith is not standing
still He has rc introduced a hill
designed to give the sitters a chance
to have their say on pay raises
Under the hill no Congress could
vote itself a salary hike Instead any
increase soled lor. would not he
granted until the succeeding session
isconscned that way voters could
|udge the worth ot those asking lor
more money and turn them out if the
additional dollars were undesersed
I think Smith also soled to kill the
proposed hike and the I T increase
already in effect
Smith deserscs our continued sup
port for working against the tide
Ixrt's hope more o f his colleagues
stand up to he counted before time
runs out letters to Washington
would help
Sincerely.
