protect exposed pipes from freezing,
government safety experts ask you
to check the tapes now for possible
fire hazards
Citing some 500 house fires
believed to have hren caused by heat
tapes over a six year period, the
U S Consumer Product Safety
Commission said tapes should be
carefully inspected annually lor
cracked, baked out. deteriorated in
sulation or bare wires that could
cause a lire Defective tapes should
be replaced immediately Always
unplug the heat tape prior to inspec
lion to avoid a shock hazard
Heat tapes are routinely used in
crawl spaces and in the substructure
of beach homes, mountains cabins,
cottages, mobile homes and similar
dwellings to prevent exposed water
and drain pipes from freezing Some
heat tapes arc left in place the year
round and arc activated by a ther
mo slat when the temperature ap
proaches 32 degrees In oilier cases,
homeowners plug in the tapes at the
starl of (he healing season and
unplug them in the spring
CPSC said tapes should never be
wrapped around (he thermal insula
lion on a pipe or used near a flam
mable object Inspect existing heat
tapes to make sure no such fire
hazards exist in the home
